FOREWORD
PETRONAS Technical Standards (PTS) has been developed based on the accumulated knowledge,
experience and best practices of the PETRONAS group supplemented by national and international
standards where appropriate. The key objective of PTS is to ensure standard technical practice across
the PETRONAS group.
Compliance to PTS is compulsory for PETRONAS‐operated facilities and Joint Ventures (JVs) where
PETRONAS has more than fifty percent (50%) shareholding and/or operational control, and includes
all phases of work activities.
Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers who use PTS are solely responsible in ensuring the quality of
work, goods and services meet the required design and engineering standards. In the case where
specific requirements are not covered in the PTS, it is the responsibility of the
Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers to propose other proven or internationally established
standards or practices of the same level of quality and integrity as reflected in the PTS.
In issuing and making the PTS available, PETRONAS is not making any warranty on the accuracy or
completeness of the information contained in PTS. The Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers shall
ensure accuracy and completeness of the PTS used for the intended design and engineering
requirement and shall inform the Owner for any conflicting requirement with other international
codes and technical standards before start of any work.
PETRONAS is the sole copyright holder of PTS. No part of this document may be reproduced, stored
in a retrieval system or transmitted in any form or by any means (electronic, mechanical, recording or
otherwise) or be disclosed by users to any company or person whomsoever, without the prior written
consent of PETRONAS.
The PTS shall be used exclusively for the authorised purpose. The users shall arrange for PTS to be
kept in safe custody and shall ensure its secrecy is maintained and provide satisfactory information to
PETRONAS that this requirement is met.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
This document specifies the requirements for valves with a maximum design temperatures >
450 °C (842 °F) and ≤ 550°C (1022°F).
This PMRC MAR shall apply in addition to the applicable PMRC datasheet.
This PMRC MAR design requirements for the heat dissipation bonnet and the production test
requirements are covered in Section 3.0 of this specification.
2.0 SUMMARY OF CHANGES
This document is the first issuance of PMRC MAR (2014).
3.0 REQUIREMENTS FOR VALVES IN HIGH TEMPERATURE SERVICES
3.1 INTRODUCTION
The requirements specified in this part are applicable, in case “Heat dissipation bonnet
design” and the designation of this PMRC MAR are specified. These requirements shall apply
in addition to the design and testing requirements specified in the base standard of the valve
and specified PMRC MARs.
3.2 HEAT DISSIPATION BONNET
3.2.1 DESIGN
3.2.1.1 Valves for temperatures above 450 °C (842 °F) shall be supplied with heat dissipation
bonnets, meeting the minimum length requirement for heat dissipation as specified in Table
1. The length of the extension shall be sufficient to maintain the stem packing at a
temperature ≤ 400 °C (≤ 752 °F) to minimise the potential for oxidiziation of graphite which
can affect the performance of valve. The heat dissipation length has two functions:
i. To clear the lagging
ii. To have sufficient length outside the lagging to dissipate the heat, so that the graphite
packing skin temperature remains below ≤ 400°C (≤ 752 °F).

3.2.1.2 The bolt sizing of bolted body‐to‐bonnet connections shall be in accordance with ASME
B16.34 and ASME VIII Division 1, Appendix 2.
3.2.1.3 The diametrical clearance between the stem and the heat dissipation bonnet housing shall
be minimised in order to increase convective heat losses.
3.2.1.4 Unless specified otherwise, the wall thickness shall meet the minimum wall thickness
requirements of ASME B16.34, Section 6.1.3, for the applicable pressure class of the valve
body. The wall thickness shall take into account the pressure stresses, as well as operating
torque, stem thrust and bending stresses induced by handwheels, gears and power
actuators.
3.2.1.5 The backseat of rising stem valves shall be located at the top of the heat dissipation bonnet.
A stem guide bushing shall be applied at the lower end of the heat dissipation bonnet.
Quarter turn valves having a primary stem seal shall have it located just below the packing
box.
3.2.1.6 Unless specified otherwise, the operating manual force F required to operate the
handwheel or lever shall not exceed 360 N. However, for seating and unseating the valve, a
maximum momentary force Fs is allowed in accordance with EN 12570, Clause 5.1.
3.3 MATERIALS
3.3.1 Unless specified otherwise, the heat dissipation bonnet shall be constructed from the same
material as the valve body. All chemical composition, inspection, testing and certification
requirements for the valve body apply to the heat dissipation bonnet.
3.3.2 The heat dissipation bonnet may be cast, forged or fabricated. Fabricated extensions utilising
tubing, shall incorporate seamless tubing and full penetration welding.
3.4 MARKING
3.4.1 In addition to the marking in accordance with the base standard, each valve of the accepted
lot shall be marked the designation of this PMRC MAR and the design temperature for which
the valve is suitable (e.g. PMRC MAR VA/140 – Design Temperature in °C) and with the
applicable fugitive emission class.
