Rod T Seals
D
Rod T-Seals - Inch
A F B
Rod T-seals were originally developed to replace o-rings, and retrofit into standard commercial o-ring
grooves. This development ended two serious reliability problems:
1. Extrusion through the clearance gap.
2. Spiral or twisting failure due to instability in the groove.
T-seal back-ups are hydraulically or pneumatically driven against the dynamic surface when system
pressure forces the elastomer into the space beneath the back-up. This immediate response to pres-
sure makes them very effective wipers, keeping contaminants away from the sealing line.
Standard material for our T-seals is 75 durometer nitrile with moly-filled nylon back-up rings. Other
materials are available upon request.
Temperature: -40˚ to +225˚F.
Pressure: 0 to 5,000 PSI
For piston T-seals, see piston seal section.

SEAL AND PACKING
Allegheny York Co.
A F B
Stepped seals are used to “buffer” pressure spikes from the primary rod seal, and are some-
times used in tandem. Combined with an unloaded u-cup, pressure builds between the step
seal and primary seal and helps “load” the u-cup. Seals are machined from bronze filled
teflon. Expanders are 70 durometer high memory nitrile, and are also available in viton.
Part numbers that contain a P63D suffix are made from 63D shore urethane.
Temperature: -40˚F to 225˚F
Pressure: 0 to 3500 psi

Rectangular Buffer Rings – Inch

These urethane buffer rings are rectangular shaped in profile. They are most commonly
used in combination with a u-cup as a rod seal. Their purpose is to protect the rod seal from
contaminants as well as to apply a hydraulic “load” to the u-cup. Some of these urethane
rings are used as a backup ring combined with a rubber sealing ring in suspension cylinder
applications. Part numbers starting with a G are used in Case® equipment; the others are
typically used in Caterpillar® equipment.

U-Cup Type Buffer Rings
A F B
U-cup type buffer rings are made in sizes to retrofit many
Caterpillar® and Case® grooves, and are easy to install.
They are designed for systems running high pressures
or susceptible to pressure spikes. The sealing element
is made from 90 durometer urethane and the anti-ex-
trusion ring is made from POM. Metric sizes retrofit the
stepped buffer ring grooves. Inch sizes below 2-1/4” do
not have backup rings.

MD Rod Squeeze Seals
d D
Style MD rod seals utilize a fabric reinforced rubber base combined with a POM backup for extrusion
resistance, and a homogeneous nitrile sealing lip, enabling this seal to handle higher pressures than
most other all-rubber seals. The “squeeze” design provides for good low pressure sealability.
The S8 style seal utilizes a u-cup type base with a bonded NBR expander. The NBR ex-
pander provides an excellent sealing contact with a fabric reinforced base providing high
pressure support. Also available in viton.
