Worksheet Week 1

1 Aims of the Seminar

The aims of this seminar are to introduce the course and to work on the topic of vocabulary in academic
and professional writing.

2 Course Description
The course outline provides details of the contents of the course, homework, and due dates for all of the
assignments. All assignments will be uploaded to Moodle (word doc. and pdf).

3 Course Assessment
The course will be assessed through:
1. A curriculum vitae – 10% (submission date – 10 April 6pm)
2. A letter of application – 10% (submission date – 10 April 6pm)
3. A term paper written with a partner – 80%. You will write a paper during the semester, receive
feedback (feedback sessions are scheduled between 1 May and 22 May) and submit your paper by 5
June 6pm.

You are free to choose the topic of the paper within the following framework:
1. The topic of the paper must be a problem in the area of business or society.
2. There must be research available (in English) on the problem itself, and the theory that is
connected with the problem. The paper must include a minimum of six references (at least one
book, and one academic journal). This assignment requires you to use academic sources. These are
the qualities you should be looking for:

 Academic or scientific credentials. If these are missing, then it isn't an academic

source
 A review of other recent research in the field
 A discussion of the original research, along with findings and conclusions
 A list of references
 Formal presentation and academic language
 Published by a professional organization, university or recognized academic
publisher

3. The paper must contain at least 2 tables or figures with data that is referred to in the paper. The
tables or figures can be drawn from an external source or created by the authors of the paper.
4. If the paper does not show evidence of any aspects of academic writing (thesis, introduction,
tables/figures, conclusion, etc.) delivered in the scripts, one full mark will be deducted. For
example: missing thesis, minus a full grade; incorrect introduction structure, minus a full grade;
insufficient sources, minus a full grade).
5. The paper must be between 1700 and 2000 words. This excludes the cover page, table of
contents, bibliography, and appendix.
6. Font size 12pt, Times New Roman. All margins – 2.5cm. Page number – bottom right. Line
spacing 1.5.
7. The problem must not be one that you have already written a paper on for another course.
4 Feedback Sessions
One thirty-minute feedback session can be scheduled between1- 22 May 2019. To
accommodate all groups, feedback sessions can be made outside of the scheduled class time,
by appointment. To receive feedback on your paper, I will need to have your work 24 hours
prior to the scheduled feedback session.
