La Concepcion College
• Concrete is composed of cement, sand, gravel and mixing water.
PCC Mix Proportion-ACI Method
Nominal maximum size is the smallest sieve opening through which the entire amount of aggregate
is permitted to pass.

ACI (American Concrete Institute) recommends a maximum water-cement ratio of 0.45

Assume 0.39 based on local experience

Dry Rodded Weight

Mass per unit volume of dry aggregate, which includes the volume of the particles and the voids
between particles, compacted by rodding under standardized conditions.
Fineness Modulus

A concrete mix is to be designed for use in a 250mm (10 inch) thick Plain Concrete Pavement, The
desired properties are:
Slump = 25 mm =1.00 inch
Average 28-day compressive strength = 4.50 MPa =650 psi
Coarse aggregates: nominal size = 37.50 mm = 1.50 inch
Dry rodded weight ( gravel) = 1600 kg /cu.m
Specific gravity, gravel = 2.68
Specific gravity, sand = 2.64
Fineness modulus = 2.80
Air content (air-entrained) = 5.50 %
Density water = 1000 kg/cu.m = 62.40 lb/cu.ft
Specific gravity of cement = 3.15

CEMENT CONTENT:
cement content = water content from the table
water-cement ratio
= 148 kg/cu.m = 379.49 kg/cu.m = 638.80 lb/cu.yd
0.39(assumed value)
Metric English
379.49 kg/cu.m x 1cu.m 638.80 lb/cu.yd x 1 cu.ft
1000 kg/cu.m x 3.15(sp. gr cement) 62.40 lb/cu.ft x 3.15
(density water) (density water)
= 0.120 cu.m = 3.41 cu.ft

PCC Mix Proportion-ACI Method
Coarse aggregate content:
Nominal maximum aggregate size =37.50 mm , FM = 2.80
Therefore, the recommended volume fraction of coarse aggregate
= 0.71 ( FM=2.80 & Nominal size of 37.50mm)
Dry rodded unit weight (given) = 1600 kg/cu.m = 100 lb/cu.ft

0.71 x 1600 kg x 1cu.m 0.71 x 100 lb x 27 cu.ft x 1 yd

cu.m cu.ft yd
= 1136 kg = 1917 lb
1000 kg/cu. m x 2.68(sp. gr.gravel) 62.40 lb/cu. ft x 2.68
= 0.424 cu.m = 11.463 cu.ft
NOTE: 1 cu. m = 1000 kg
PCC Mix Proportion-ACI Method
Fine Aggregate Content:
Metric
volume(1cu.m or 1 cu.yd) 1.000 cu.m
Volume of mixing water 0.148 cu.m , vol=mass = 148kg
Volume of air 0.055 cu.m density 1000 kg/cu.m
Volume of Portland cement 0.120 cu.m
Volume of coarse aggregate 0.424 cu.m
0.747 cu.m

Volume of fine aggregates = 1.000 – 0.747 = 0.253 cu.m

Word Problem No.1

required is 6 inches. Admixture was added to achieve 2% air content,
