Number of times each hour that two children spoke, shown as raw scores and Z
scores.
Raw Scores to Z-scores
Raw Score – ordinary score (or any
number in a distribution before it has
been made into a Z score or otherwise
transformed).
Steps to Change a Raw Score
to a Z Score
𝑥𝑥 = 𝑧𝑧𝑧𝑧 + 𝜇𝜇
Jacob would have a Z score of -1 (M = 12
and SD = 4, thus a score of 8 is 1 SD below
M).
𝑥𝑥 − 𝜇𝜇
𝑧𝑧 =
𝜎𝜎
8 − 12
𝑧𝑧 =
4
𝑧𝑧 = −1
Ryan were observed speaking to other
children 20 times in an hour a Z score of +2
(M = 12 and SD = 4, thus a score of 20 is 2
SD above the Mean).
𝑥𝑥 − 𝜇𝜇
𝑧𝑧 =
𝜎𝜎
20 − 12
𝑧𝑧 =
4
𝑧𝑧 = +2
Example
Students were asked the extent to which they were
a morning person. Using a scale from 1 (not at all)
to 7 (extremely), the mean was 3.40 and the
standard deviation was 1.47. Suppose a student’s
raw score is 6. Determine the z–score and
interpret.
Given
Variable = extent as a morning person.
Measurement=Scale from 1 (not at all)
to 7 (extremely)
Mean: 𝜇𝜇 =3.40
Standard Deviation: 𝜎𝜎=1.47
Raw Score: x=6
Solution: Given: 𝜇𝜇 =3.40 SD: 𝜎𝜎=1.47 x=6
𝑥𝑥 − 𝜇𝜇
𝑧𝑧 =
𝜎𝜎 That is, the student’s
6 − 3.40 raw score is 1.77
𝑧𝑧 =
1.47 standard deviations
2.60 above the mean.
𝑧𝑧 =
1.47
𝑧𝑧 = 1.77
Example
Suppose another student has a Z score of
-1.63, a score will be below the mean.
(This student is much less of a morning
person than is typically the case for
students.) Find the exact raw score for this
student.
Solution:
Given: 𝑧𝑧 =-1.63; SD: 𝜎𝜎=1.47;𝜇𝜇 = 3.40
𝑥𝑥 = 𝑧𝑧𝑧𝑧 + 𝜇𝜇
𝑥𝑥 = −1.63 (1.47) + 3.40
𝑥𝑥 = −2.40 + 3.40
𝑥𝑥 = 1.00
𝑧𝑧 = 1.39
The student’s stress level is 1.39 standard deviations
above the mean.
Example:
The following are scores of Theresa in her four exams. In
which course did she perform best?
English 40 34 8
History 42 33 6
Exams Score Mean Standard Z-scores

Math 20 14 3 2
Science 30 25 5 1
