July 23, 2020

Aloha Ben Parker Ohana,

This is an update for our students, families, and community, regarding beginning of the school year
information and procedures. Hopefully this can provide some clarity as we continue to work on a
more detailed plan for the reopening of school.

First 9 Days of School August 4-14, 2020

You should have received a letter in the mail indicating your child’s homeroom and teacher. If your
child is in Grades 3-6 this letter would have also informed you on what Group your child is in. If
you have not received this information, or have questions please contact us at 307-1100.
The first (9) nine days of school, from August 4th-14th, will be half-days. These days will be used to
assess student needs and transition them to our new classroom and classroom expectations. Lunch
will be provided on these days.

Student Drop-Off and Pick-up Locations (map will be posted on website prior to the opening of school)
Student drop-off and pick-up locations are assigned as follows:

Preschool – A Building Parking lot

K - Grade 2 – Drive through in front of the Office Building
Grades 3 – 6 – D Building parking lot.

AN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

Parents will not be allowed to get out of their vehicles. We will have staff on hand to assist students
to their classrooms or designated waiting areas before school. After school pick-up will be in the
same location as drop off.

If your child eats breakfast at school, breakfast will be available from 7:15-7:45am. Parents may
not come on campus to eat breakfast with their child.

School Supplies
We will be having a supply drop off day for students in grades K-3 on TUESDAY JULY, 28th, from
9am to 1pm. If you plan to drop off supplies, please place all items in a bag labeled with your
child’s FIRST and LAST NAME as well as HOMEROOM number.

If you are unable to drop off supplies at this time, students may bring it with them on the first day of
school.

100% Distance Learning

Parents have expressed an interest in 100% Distance Learning. We will be offering this as an
option for students and families. At this time, we are still finalizing the details. If you are
interested in having your child participate in 100% Distance Learning, please call or email us at
DL2020@benparker.k12.hi.us. Be sure to indicate your child’s name and grade level. We will
provide more information as it becomes available.

Social Distancing
To keep to social distancing guidelines, the following will be in place:
 Students will be dropped off at designated drop-off areas.
 To limit the amount of visitors on campus, parents will not be allowed to eat meals with
their children or walk them to classrooms.
 All classrooms and the cafeteria will be set up to follow distancing guidelines.
 Student supplies, manipulatives, etc. will be individualized per student.

Face Masks
Everyone on campus is required to wear a face mask at all times, both in and out of the classroom.
This includes all personnel, staff, students, and visitors. Classroom teachers will create procedures
to allow for “mask breaks” throughout the day and as needed that adhere to physical distance
guidelines.

Sanitizing and Disinfecting

As recommended by the CDC the State Department of Health, facilities will be cleaned daily.
Sanitizing and disinfecting kits are being provided to every classroom. High-touch areas, such as
door knobs, light switches, counters, desks and chairs, railings, and water fountains, will be
disinfected regularly.

Uniforms
Ben Parker T-shirts are required for all students. You may order online by going to our website –
click on “students” tab then on “school uniforms,” and “order uniforms. We WILL NOT be having
a Back to School Night this year, so if you have ordered and requested to pick up your shirts at
Back to School Night, we will deliver your order to your child’s homeroom to be sent home. All
new t-shirt orders should be sent to your home address.
We understand that T-shirt orders may not be delivered by the start of school. There will be a grace
period in which students will be allowed to wear non-uniform attire up until September 9, 2020.

A+ After School Program

A+ after school care will be available beginning August 17, 2020. Applications are available on-
line, at our school office, or you may contact our A+/Kama’aina Kids Site Coordinator, Lisa Kaiwi,
at 286-0468.

We know that there may be confusion and concern at this time. Know that we are doing our best to
keep you informed as we get closer to beginning the school year. As information continues to
become available, we will update our website and keep you informed.

Sincerely,

Kathy Kahikina
Principal
