Using available source rock, seep, show and oil field data, ' 13
petroleum systems have been defined in the Romanfan hydrocarbon
producing sedimentary provinces . Designation of systems followed
Magoon's (1988) identification rules . Limits shown in Fig .1 are
those of the migration-entrapment (Demaison and Huizinga, 1991)
subsystems .

The Pucioasa-Fusaru sandstone(!) and Alunis-Kilwa sandstone( ! )

petroleum systems (VII and VIII, Fig .1) are housed in the three,
outermost napees of the East Carpathians . Their prolific Oligocene
source rocks, as well as Eocene, Oligocene and Pliocene reservoir
rocks accumulated in an orogenic compressional basin with almost
continuous subsidence during the whole Hauterivian to Pliocene
interval . The duration of the system was about 24 million years with
a critical moment slightly before 10 million years ago
(Badenian/Sarmatian) .

The Dogger, Rimesti-Fauresti(!) and Etropole-Mesozoic carbonate(!)

petroleum system (IX and X, Fig .1) are located in an eustatically
controlled sedimentation of a large platform foreland basin . During
the Middle Jurassic-Pliocene interval, sedimentation was mostly
shallow water and included effective source rocks and good
reservoir carbonate and clastic rocks (Mesozoic ; Middle Miocene-
Pliocene) . The duration of these petroleum system was about 165
million years . The critical moment is probably pre-Sarmatian, some
10 to 12 million years ago . Another foreland petroleum system (XII,
Fig .1) was sourced by Neogene skales . Hydrocarbons veere gathered by
Infra-anhydrite or Sarmatian Glastics of the Moldavian and Scythian
platforms . In the Birlad sub-basin (Scythian Platform) a
hypothetical petroleum system consists of Lower to Middle Jurassic
black skales and Dogger siliceous sandstone reservoirs .

The Late Sarmatian - Pliocene hydrocarbon reservoirs of all the

above mentioned petroleum systems belong to the post-tectonic cover
and are common both to the orogen and to the foreland . Traditionally
fit was considered that the Pliocene skales accumulated in the
Carpathian Foredeep, generated the hydrocarbons of the Pliocene oil
reservoirs . However, the burial charts show these source rocks did
not reach the oil window and consequently this common, post-
thrusting cover does not represent an independent petroleum system .

Four other post-tectonic petroleum systems : the Panonian shales-

clastics(!), the Jibou( .), the Radiolaria Shale-Middle Miocene to
Pliocene Glastics(!) and the Maykop Shale-Cretaceous to Paleogene(!)
respectively I, II, IV and XI on Fig .1, as well as Deleni(?),
Teleajen-Sita(?) and Valea Carelor-Borsa( .) orogenic petroleu m

EAPG - 5th Conference and Technical Exhibition - Stavanger, Norway, 7 - 11 June 1993
systems (respectively V, XIII and III on Fig .1) will not be
presented in this poster session .

The Oligocene orogenic petroleum systems of the East and South

Carpathians are, partly superposed over the Dogger and Badenian
foreland platform petroleum _ system as a result of the Intra-
Sarmatian overthrust movements .

An estimation of remaining hydrocarbon resources in one orogen and

one platform system has been made using the application of petroleum
system concepts, analysis of past exploration and production records
and field-size distribution plotted on various log/log graphs .
