GATHERING AROUND THE WORD
Opening Prayer
Lord, we come to you this day in the midst of our summertime. For
many this is a time of relaxation; but for others, the burdens, worries,
and cares continue to weigh them down as we live under the threat of
a pandemic so deeply impacting ourselves and our communities. Be
with each of us as we open our ears to hear your words, our hearts to
feel your presence, and our spirits to receive your healing touch. In
Jesus’ Name, we pray. AMEN.

Call to Worship
One: Come, all who are hungry and thirsty.
All: The Lord will provide for our needs.
One: Come this day to the table of the Lord.
All: Here we will find welcome and sustenance.
One: Come to this time of gathering and praise.
All: Lord, we come with open hearts and spirits to receive
your gracious gift of love. AMEN.

Hymn
O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing
O for a thousand tongues to sing
My dear Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King.
The triumphs of God’s grace!
Jesus, the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
‘Tis life, and health, and peace.
Christ breaks the power of reigning sin,
And sets the prisoner free;
Christ’s blood can make the sinful clean,
Christ’s blood availed for me.
My gracious Master and my God,
Asist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.
Prayer of Confession
All: Gracious Lord, we are filled with a mixture of feelings today.
Some of us are rejoicing in the wonderful time of rest and
relaxation; while others continue to seek relief from the
burdens and worries that they bear. All of us stand in need
3
of your refreshing and nourishing love and forgiveness.
You know how many times we have turned our backs on
those in need; we have been too busy, to preoccupied with
our own problems. Cause us to turn around and see
instances in which we can be of help and comfort to
someone else. Give us strength and courage to truly be
your loving disciples in the ways in which we care for
others. Forgive us when we stray from the paths of
righteousness and peace. These things we offer in Jesus’
Name. AMEN.

Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: Friends, rejoice! God’s love is poured over you this day for
healing, restoration, and hope. Feel the power of God’s mercy
in your life. Go into God’s world knowing you are forgiven and
blessed; Likewise, be a blessing to others.
All: Thanks be to Christ our Lord!
PROCLAIMING THE WORD
Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the New Testament
Romans 9:1-5
I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience
confirms it by the Holy Spirit— 2 I have great sorrow and unceasing
anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed
and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred
4
according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the
adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship,
and the promises; 5 to them belong the patriarchs, and from them,
according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God
blessed forever. Amen.

Reading from the Gospel
Mathew 14:13-21
13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a
deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed
him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore, he saw a great
crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15 When
it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted
place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they
may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 Jesus said
to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”
17 They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.”
18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19 Then he ordered the
crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two
fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and
gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
20 And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of
5
the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 And those who ate were
about five thousand men, besides women and children.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
Affirmation of Faith Confession of 1967-9.18
We affirm that God expressed love for all mankind through Israel,
whom he chose to be his covenant people to serve him in love
and faithfulness. When Israel was unfaithful, he disciplined the
nation with his judgements and maintained his cause through
prophets, priests, teachers, and true believers. These witnesses
called Israelites to a destiny in which they would serve God
faithfully and become a light to the nations. The same witnesses
proclaimed the coming of a new age, and a true servant of God in
whom God’s purpose for Israel and for mankind would be
realized.

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer
Hymn
I Come with Joy
I come with joy to meet my Lord,
Forgiven, loved, and free,
In awe and wonder to recall
His life laid down for me,
His life laid down for me.

8
I come with Christians far and near
To find, as all are fed.
The new community of love
In Christ’s communion bread,
In Christ’s communion bread.
As Christ breaks bread and bids us share,
Each proud division ends.
The love that made us, makes us one,
And strangers now are friends,
And strangers now are friends.
Together met, together bound,
We’ll go our different ways,
And as His people in the world,
We’ll live and speak His praise,
We’ll live and speak His praise.
Benediction

August Stewardship Update
Your CPC leadership thanks you for your continued support in financial
gifts for the ministries of the church. Giving this past month was lighter
than the month prior. We are collecting gifts at about 25% short of what
is needed to continue to meet our operational needs.
If you have been making gifts in support of the ministries here at Christ
Presbyterian Church, we thank you for your generous heart. If you
have not given recently, we encourage you to consider doing so.
Ways to give from home:
1. Online at www.largocpc.org
2. Through GIVEplus App on Apple or Android devices
3. Mail a gift directly to the church
4. Use the bill pay option through your bank.
Your giving through any of these options allows us to meet the needs
of the ministries that Christ has entrusted us with as his church.
