Welcome and Announcements

GATHERING AROUND THE WORD
Opening Prayer
Almighty God, You have filled us with the light of the
Word who became flesh and lived among us. Let the
light shine in all that we do; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN.

Call to Worship John 1:1,14 and Ephesians 1:3

One: In the beginning was the Word of God;
All: and the Word became flesh to live among
us.
One: Blessed is the Lord our God,
All: and blessed is Jesus Christ our Savior.
One: Let us worship God!

Hymn
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King,
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!”
Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies;
With the angelic host proclaim,
“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the new born King!”
Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of the virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail the incarnate Deity,
Pleased in flesh with us to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”

3
Hail the heaven born Prince of Peace!
Hail the sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His glory by, Born that we no more may die,
Born to rise us from the earth,
Born to give us second birth.
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”
Call to Reconciliation
Prayer of Confession
God of compassion, have mercy upon us as we
make our confession. A new year has begun. We
have made promises and pledges to do better in the
coming days that we have in the past year. Some of
these are in conflict with Your will. We will likely look
to help ourselves rather than others. The new life
that you offer is not yet proclaimed in the land.
Forgive us our sins and make us more faithful. Help
us to use our time and gifts wisely as we follow
Christ’s way in the days before us.
Silent Confession

Assurance of Pardon
One: The grace of God overflows for us through Christ
Jesus who came into the world to save sinners.
Friends, believe in the good news. In Jesus Christ,
we are forgiven.
All: Together we are the Body of Christ. Thanks be
to God!
Hymn
Away in a Manger
Away in a manger, no crib for His bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep of the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the poor Baby wakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky,
And stay by my side until morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Epistles
Ephesians 1:3-14
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has
blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly
places, 4 just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the
world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5 He destined us
for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the
good pleasure of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he
freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption
through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the
riches of his grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight
9 he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his
good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10 as a plan for the fullness
of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on
earth. 11 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been
destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things
according to his counsel and will, 12 so that we, who were the first to
set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him
you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your
salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the
promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward
redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

Reading from the Gospel
John 1:1-18
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came
into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.
What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light
of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did
not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was
John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might
believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to
testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was
coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into
being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what
was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who
received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become
children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the
flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh
and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a
father’s only son, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified to him and
cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks
ahead of me because he was before me.’”) 16 From his fullness we
have all received, grace upon grace. 17 The law indeed was given
7
through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one
has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s
heart, who has made him known.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and
earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was
conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and
buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on
the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the
Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the
body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

It will lead to the place where the Christ was born,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

Follow, follow, Rise up, shepherd, and follow,
Follow the Star of Bethlehem,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow.
If you take good heed to the angel’s word,

The leadership of CPC would like to thank you for your monetary
donations and the gift of your time in volunteering to help the church
continue its outreach to others. We also thank for the many gifts you
sent in to help us close out the year. We had some large bills that came
due on the last day of the year and an unbudgeted and significant
increase in our insurance expense for 2021. Receiving your regular
gifts and donations will help us considerably in meeting our obligations
and sustain the many ministries of Christ Presbyterian Church.
Remember there are four easy ways to give right from the comfort of
your home. Once again, we thank you for your generous support.
Ways to give from home:
1. Online at www.largocpc.org
2. Through GIVEplus App on Apple or Android devices
