When we want to talk about something we saw or events in the past, we use there was/there were.
In the present we use there is/there are.

Short answers
Yes, there was. / No, there wasn't.
Yes, there were. / No, there weren't.
• We often use there was / there were with a/an, some and any.
• We use some and any with plural nouns.
• Use some in positive (+) sentences, and any in negative sentences (-) and questions (?).
• some = not an exact number.
