Problem 1 (12.5 val)

Take into consideration the structure presented in the figure and its simplified model
Before starting your calculations, think about the characteristics of the structure behavior

The only loads present are the permanent and live loads distributed on beam AB.
Do not consider any structural own weights.
For a unity uniform distributed load on Beam AB the axial force in bar EF is 5.75 kN.

a) Take beam AB .

(1.0 val.) a1) For the main combination of actions for ultimate load, determine the stress resultants for moments
and shear effects.
(1.5 val.) a2) Design the upper and lower reinforcements, respectively over the support and on the span.
Comment on the reasons for the diferent values of x in the two sections.
(2.5 val.) a3) Design an indicate the distribution of the transversal reinforcement along the beam (take  = 30).
Take a pratical and economical efficient stirrup distribution along the span. If  =26º would we get a
more economical solution ? How can you explain those differences ?
(2.5 val.) a4) Evaluate the longitudinal reinforcement near the supports A and B and its anchorage length ( =
30) and based on the previous calculations draw in detail the beam reinforcement (take the drawing
delivered in the exam). The longitudinal reinforcement layout should be represented qualitatively.
b) Analyse bar EF and CD
(1.0 val.) b1) Verify that both bars EF and CD are cracked for the frequent combination of actions
(2.5 val.) b2) Consider constant the following reinforcements in bars EF and:
316

816
0.25
8/0.20 0.80
8/0.15
0.25

0.40
Evaluate the maximal crack openings on those bars, not considering the participation of
concrete between cracks, for the same load combination.
If that effect was considered how would vary the results? Explain based on a physical model.

(1.5 val.) b3) Detail bar EF (take the drawing delivered in the exam) Examine specially the connections to the
beams. Try to represent the flow of the main tensions and compressions at the top and bottom
nodes

Problem 2 (7.5 val)

Consider the structural model presented to a sole combination of actions given by:
Nsd = 700kN N sd 0.70

H sd 0.40
Hsd = 55 kN

a) Relatively to the structural characteristics and stress resultant distributions:

(1.5 val.) a1) Calculate the column slenderness for the Hypotesis of fixed and mobile support B. Comment the
results relatively to what could be expected.
st
(0.75 val.) a2) For the hypothesis of mobile support B evaluate the 1 . order stress resultants distribution,
considering that the moment at the cast-in end is 3 times bigger than at the beams connection.
(0.25 val.) a3) And for the case of a fixed support B?

b) Considering design and detailing:

nd
(2.5 val.) b1) For the case of a mobile support B consider the effects of geometrical imperfections and of 2 .
order effects (in case these are mandatory), to verify the column safety (flexion and shear).
(2.5 val.) b2) Draw and detail all reinforcements, including in the column the extremities considering that the
structure is to be built in a seismic region (take the drawing delivered in the exam).
