CHAPTER-1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Religious:

Religious is a term or word that everybody in this world observe on his or her own way.
Religious is a fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a group of
people. These set of beliefs concern the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, and
involve devotional and ritual observances. They also often contain a moral code governing
the conduct of human affairs.

Ever since the world began, man has demonstrated a natural inclination towards faith and
worship of anything he considered superior/difficult to understand. His religion consisted of
trying to appease and get favors from the supreme being he feared. This resulted in
performing rituals (some of them barbaric) and keeping traditions or laws to earn goodness
and/or everlasting life.
In normal scense religious is believe that we follow and we know religious is in many names.
For example Hindu, Muslim, Buddha, Christian etc. In every religious there have some basic
function we observe in a particular day as a whole group by united together with same
beliefs.
In another scence Religious besides meaning "having to do with religion," can also mean
"acting as if something is a religion." If you have never missed a broadcast of your favorite
TV show for the last five years, then you're religious about it.
Just as religion is a broad concept with multiple manifestations, the word religious can be
used in many contexts. You could literally be describing someone's particular religious duties
as prescribed by his religion. If you have a religious temperament, you think about spiritual
things a lot. If someone is a fanatic about football, you could describe him as a religious fan.
That doesn't mean he thinks the football is God, just that he really, really cares

Business:

A business is defined as an organization or enterprising entity engaged in commercial,

industrial, or professional activities. Businesses can be for-profit entities or non-profit
organizations that operate to fulfill a charitable mission or further a social cause.
The term business also refers to the organized efforts and activities of individuals to produce
and sell goods and services for profit. Businesses range in scale from a sole proprietorship to

Page | 6
an international corporation. Several lines of theory are engaged with understanding business
administration including organizational behavior, organization theory, and strategic
management.
Generally, a business begins with a business concept (the idea) and a name. Depending on
the nature of the business, extensive market research may be necessary to determine whether
turning the idea into a business is feasible and if the business can deliver value to consumers.
The business name can be one of the most valuable assets of a firm; careful consideration
should thus be given when choosing it. Businesses operating under fictitious names must be
registered with the state.
Many businesses organize themselves around some sort of hierarchy or bureaucracy, where
positions in a company have established roles and responsibilities. The most common
structures include sole proprietorship, partnerships, corporations, and limited liability
companies, with sole proprietorships being the most prevalent.
Business sizes range from small owner-operated companies, such as family restaurants, to
multinational conglomerates such as General Electric. Larger businesses may issue corporate
stock to finance operations. In this case, the company is publicly traded and has reporting and
operating restrictions. Alternatively, smaller businesses may operate more independently of
regulators.
A company may describe its business by communicating the industry in which it operates.
For example, the real estate business, advertising business, or mattress production business
are industries in which a business can exist. Because the term “business” can be interchanged
with day-to-day operations as well as the overall formation of a company, the term is often
used to indicate transactions regarding an underlying product or service. For example,
ExxonMobil transacts business by providing oil.

Relationship between Religious & Business:

We are human being, so we must have our own religious with our own belief and this
religious is directly interconnected with business activity. In normal scence many people can
not identify the connection between religious activity with business activity. But if we think
deeper than we can find a strong connection between religious and business activity.
Religious is mainly a culture of our own belief and we know that culture is the main
determinants of what we do, what we eat, what we buy. There is the main point what we buy,
that’s mean what we do will obviously affect our buying and selling decision and when
buying and selling decision comes together in our mind that time definitely we can
understand that there is a obvious strong connection between Religious and Business.

Abstract:

This cross-country study adopts a competing theories approach in which both a value perspective
and a social capital perspective are used to understand the relation between religion and a
country's business ownership rate. We distinguish among four dimensions of religion: belonging
to a religious denomination, believing certain religious propositions, bonding to religious
practices, and behaving in a religious manner. An empirical analysis of data from 30 OECD
countries with multiple data points per country covering the period 1984-2010 suggests a
positive relationship between religion and business ownership based on those dimensions that
reflect the internal aspects of religiosity (i.e., believing and behaving). We do not observe a
significant association for those dimensions that reflect more external aspects of religion (i.e.,
belonging and bonding). These results suggest that the social capital perspective prevails the
value perspective, at least when internal aspects of religiosity are concerned. More generally, our
study demonstrates the importance of distinguishing between different dimensions of religion
when investigating the link between religion and entrepreneurship.

CHAPTER-2: COUNTRY AND FESTIVAL OVERVIEW

2.1 About the country

Sri Lanka officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island

country in South Asia, located in the Indian Ocean to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to
the southeast of the Arabian Sea. The island is geographically separated from the Indian
subcontinent by the Gulf of Manner and the Palk Strait. The legislative capital, Sri
Jayewardenepura Kotte, is a suburb of the commercial capital and largest city, Colombo.
Sri Lanka's documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pr-historic human
settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. It has a rich cultural heritage and the first
known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, date back to the Fourth Buddhist
council in 29 BC.[11][12] Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic
importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to the modern Maritime Silk Road.

Sri Lanka was known from the beginning of British colonial rule as Ceylon. A nationalist
political movement arose in the country in the early 20th century to obtain political
independence, which was granted in 1948; the country became a republic and adopted its current
name in 1972. Sri Lanka's recent history has been marred by a 26-year civil war, which ended
decisively when the Sri Lanka Armed Forces defeated the Liberation Tigers of Tamil
Eelam (LTTE) in 2009.[16]
The current constitution stipulates the political system as a republic and a unitary state governed
by a semi-presidential system. It has had a long history of international engagement, as a
founding member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation(SAARC), and a
member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, the G77, and the Non-Aligned
Movement. Along with the Maldives, Sri Lanka is one of only two South Asian countries rated
"high" on the Human Development Index (HDI), with its HDI rating and per capita income the
highest among South Asian nations. The Sri Lankan constitution accords Buddhism the
"foremost place", although it does not identify it as a state religion. Buddhism is given special
privileges in the Sri Lankan constitution

Page | 10
The island is home to many cultures, languages and ethnicities. The majority of the population
are from the Sinhalese ethnicity, while a large minority of Tamils have also played an influential
role in the island's history. Moors, Burghers, Malays, Chinese, and the indigenous Vedda are also
established groups on the island.

9. Eid-al-Fitr
Sri Lankan Muslims on Wednesday observed somewhat of a subdued Eid and most prayers were
carried out under strict security measures following the resignation of Muslim leaders from the
government.
In the house of Adhilah Ismail, 25, there was no biriani, a lunchtime staple for Sri Lankan
Muslims during Eid. “Things at home were very scaled down this year, we didn’t do a biriani,
only simple food,” she said.
Her family usually receives lots of visitors who come to visit her grandmother and father, but
this year only close relatives dropped in.
The usual festivities took a back seat this year and instead many families opted to observe only
the religious aspects of the occasion.

Sri Lanka's Muslim Community was observing the festival a day after Muslim leaders in
government resigned from their posts over demands made by hardline Buddhist monks.
Mosques were given police protection and worshipers had to undergo body checks before being
admitted to prayer
The All Sri Lanka Jamiyyathul Ulama, the country’s apex body of the Muslim community,
called on Sri Lankans to hold Eid celebrations "in a very simple manner," and asked women not
to go shopping for the festival.
Instructions given by the ASJU included refraining “from unnecessary luxury and extravagance
and to engage in possible assistance to those victims who are affected” by the Easter Sunday
