14 DEALING WITH PEOPLE

Start up
1. Work in pairs. Discuss the questions. What things make you….
irritated? depressed? stressed? upset?
EXAMPLE
I get irritated when people don't reply to my emails.
 I get irritated when people chew with their mouths open.
 I get depressed when I have bad grades or some unsolved problem.
 I get stressed when my jobs accumulate.
 I get upset when I see dangerous animals.
2. Do the quiz. Add up your a, b, and c answers. Then read your profile.
3. Work in groups. Read the quiz again. Why do you think some responses are better than
others?
Because some answers talk about responding to a situation impulsively and I consider that
this is not the way to solve situations, on the contrary, if we act calmly, we can resolve the
situation.

You and others

We all have to deal with difficult situations in everyday life-at home, at school, and at work. But we
deal with them in different ways. What would you do in each of these situations? Be honest!

1 A month ago, a colleague did something that upset you. If you were alone together, you would

a. calmly tell them what upset you

b. say nothing about it-it's too late to talk about it now
c. refuse to talk and simply walk away.
2 You work in customer services. If you had a call from an angry customer, you would
a. ask questions to understand why the caller is angry
b. tell the caller that it isn't your fault
c. hang up.
3 If you were leaving a job that you hated, and there was a party for you, you would
a. go to it, look happy, then forget about it afterwards
b. go to it for five minutes, then explain that you have to leave
c. refuse to go to it.
4 If you did badly in an Interview for a job you really wanted, you would
a. list your strengths and weaknesses and decide how to improve
b. rewrite your CV
c. go home and be really miserable.
5 If you shared an office and your colleague had a very irritating habit, you would
a. explain to your colleague how you feel
b. ignore it, because you've probably got irritating habits too
c. complain to your boss.

TECHNOPHOBE OR TECHNOPHILE
In our daily life we can find 2 types of technophobic people (A person who fears, does not like or
avoids new technologies.)

As we can see, these are two concepts as different as two opposite poles. Some of them prefer to
continue working with traditional methods and reject any type of technology. Instead, at the other
extreme, we find those who feel totally incorporated into the world of technology, convinced that
technology is equivalent to "evolution and progress".

I believe that we must control the use of technologies, that is, always give it an adequate use since
the extremes were never good. However, the clear presence of technophobia at school, work or at
home is worrisome to some extent because it can cause difficulties in the development of daily
activities. We cannot ignore technologies because they are in constant presence in our daily lives.

SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT THE

INTERNET!
I really think that many people give more importance to the use that they can give to the internet
but they don't wonder what is behind the internet? The Internet is a worldwide network of
computers linked by telephone systems. We can find two basic types of computers: servers (where
the information we are looking for is stored) and clients (home, school or work computers). There
is a process behind just a search that we carry out daily, when we write the address of a website,
the computer connects to a 'gateway' server that is operated by your Internet service provider
(ISP). Then our request to view a page is transmitted by the ISP to other servers. In just seconds, it
goes from one server to another until it reaches the destination host server. Finally we can see the
web page that we request.

The internet is structured by several elements by which any computer can be accessed with a
computer with just one click.

Thanks to the internet it has been possible to connect to any part of the world in real time.
