HEAT TRANSFER

Solve the following problems completely. Present a logical, correct and neat solution.
This must be submitted personally on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at 7:00 AM.
One minute late corresponds to minus one point to your total score.

1. Consider the nodal point O located on the boundary between materials of

thermal conductivity kA and kB. Derive the finite-difference equations, assuming
no internal heat generation.

2. Consider the square channel shown in the sketch operating under steady-state
conditions. The inner surface of the channel is at a uniform temperature of 600
K, while the outer surface is exposed to convection with a fluid at 300 K and a
convection coefficient of 50 W/m 2K. From a symmetrical element of the
channel, a two-dimensional grid has been constructed and the nodes labeled.
The temperatures for nodes 1, 3, 6, 8 and 9 are identified. Use x = y =
0.01m. Use two methods in finding the unknown temperatures.

h = 50 W/m2K

3. A flue passing hot exhaust gases has a square cross section, 300 mm to a
side. The walls are constructed of refractory brick 150 mm thick with a thermal
conductivity of 0.85 W/mK. Calculate the heat loss from the flue per unit length
when the interior and the exterior surfaces are maintained at 350C and 25C,
respectively. Use a grid spacing of 50 mm. Use Gauss-Siedel iteration.
4. Consider two dimensional, steady state conduction in a square cross section
with prescribed surface temperatures. Determine the temperatures at nodes 1,
2, 3 and 4. Estimate the midpoint temperature. Use matrix inversion (Gauss-
Jordan Method)

5. Consider a long bar of square cross section (0.8 m to a side) and a thermal
conductivity of 0.1 W/mK. Three of these sides are maintained at a uniform
temperature of 300C. the fourth side is exposed to a fluid at 100C for which
the convection heat transfer coefficient is 10 W/m 2K. Using Gauss-Jordan
method with a grid spacing of 0.1 m, determine the midpoint temperature and
heat transfer rate between the bar and the fluid per unit length of the bar. Use
Gauss-Siedel iteration.

6. On your own point of view, answer the following: a) What is Heat Transfer? b)
How is heat being transferred? c) Why do you need to study heat transfer?
