Daniel is Thrown into a Lions’ Den

Darius was the ruler of a mighty kingdom. Having a whole kingdom to look after is
hard work, so Darius thought it would be a good idea to appoint leaders to help him
rule. He would appoint 120 altogether, but three of them would be supervisors, in
charge of the others. One of these supervisors was a young man named Daniel. Now
this Daniel was a pretty awesome guy who was super-good at his job. In fact, the
king was so impressed with Daniel that he thought he would appoint him over the
entire kingdom. Because of this, the other leaders and supervisors were jealous and
constantly tried to get Daniel into trouble. As we’ve already said, however, Daniel was
super-good at his job, and this meant that he never made any mistakes. In fact, the
only thing these haters could think of to get Daniel into trouble was his faith in God.

So the jealous leaders and supervisors went to King Darius and told him what a
wonderful and mighty King he was. They told him he was so wonderful and mighty
that a law should be passed meaning that anyone who prayed to any other being
within the next 30 days would be punished by being fed to lions. King Darius was
very flattered and puffed up by these compliments, so he agreed to put the law into
practice.

Daniel, of course, knew all about the law. But nothing could stop him from praying to
his God. He continued to pray in his room three times daily, just as he had always
done. The leaders set out to spy on him and were over the moon when they
discovered him praying. This was just what they wanted and they were filled with
delight as they went to report his disobedience to the king.

The king was very fond of Daniel and was upset when he heard how he had
disobeyed the new law. He thought long and hard about how he might rescue his
favourite supervisor, but the other leaders and supervisors urged him to follow
through with the punishment, telling him that laws which were put in place by the
king could not be changed. So the king gave the order, and Daniel was brought and
thrown into a den of lions. The king tried to help Daniel to feel better, telling him
that because he had served God so well, God would surely rescue him. Then a stone
was brought and placed over the opening of the den. Then the king went back to his
palace, his heart full of sadness and worry. He was so sad that he couldn’t eat or
sleep.

In the morning, as soon as it was light, the king got up and rushed to the lions’
den.  As he came near to the den, he called out to Daniel in a worried voice, “Daniel,
servant of God, was the God you serve able to rescue you from the lions?” He was
delighted when Daniel replied, telling him that God had sent an angel to close the
lions’ mouths, and that he was alive and well. The king quickly had Daniel pulled out
of the well. He was amazed that he didn’t even have a single scratch upon his body.
He knew that this was because Daniel had trusted God.

After he had punished the leaders and supervisors who were so full of hate that they
wanted Daniel killed, the king made a new rule, that everyone should now worship
Daniel’s god.

“For he is the living God;

he endures forever.
His kingdom will not be destroyed;
his authority is forever.
He rescues and delivers
and performs signs and wonders
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions!”

Daniel continued to be a great leader in the kingdom and received much reward.
