Do grow lights use a lot of electricity?

Indoor planting is becoming more and more popular. There are various types of
planting lights, including red and blue lights, full spectrum led grow lights, UV/IR
supplemental lighting bars and so on. Every grower may have some below problems.

Do grow lights use a lot of electricity?

Grow lights don’t use as much electricity as you may think. If you have a smaller
grow, you don’t need to set aside hundreds of dollars each month to run your grow
lights. Due to increasing competition amongst grow light manufacturers, innovation
is pushing efficiency further and further. These days, indoor growing is not as
expensive as you’d think!

How much electricity do LED grow lights use?

Calculating how much electricity an LED grow light uses is not that difficult. The
hardest part is gathering all the information you need, in order to do the calculation.
And that’s not actually hard either, because you only need two pieces of information,
both of which are easy to get:

 the actual wattage of the light

 the number of hours the light is running per day
The actual power draw of a light should be easy to find. Any reputable manufacturer
will provide this information.
Let’s take one of the most popular lights on the market and use it to run through an
example. We ’ ll use the Spider Farmer SF4000. We have a review of the Spider
Farmer lights here.

As you can see from the table in that review, the SF 4000 consumes 404 watts.
Because power companies use kilowatts (kw) per hour, we need to convert 404 watts
to kw/h. To do this, simply divide the wattage by 1000. That gives us a power draw of
0.404 kw/h.

The number of hours the light is running is something you should know, but if you
are trying to estimate how much it will cost you to run the light and are not yet sure
how long it will run, use the following numbers.

If you are growing marijuana, your lights should generally run for 18 hours per day
during vegging and 12 hours per day during flowering.

Is there easy way to know how much electricity your grow light cost?
A grow room electricity calculator will help you develop realistic expectations for the
costs of running your lights.
Do LED grow lights cost less to run?
LED grow lights may have the highest initial cost of all the lighting types, but they pay
for themselves over time.

These lights are the most efficient, and cost far less to run than MH/HPS and CMH,
while providing arguably the highest performance.

On top of this, LED’s generate less heat than other grow lights. This cuts HVAC costs,
further lowering your energy bill.
