For over a couple years now I’ve had platinum blonde hair.

I need to start this tutorial with a quick story about the journey I went on to get my hair where it is today. It started
to ask my (previous) salon to have them transform my long, brown locks into a short, platinum blonde hair angled
short I ended up NOT getting platinum, rather a very warm (pee) color. Three di erent hair stylists, and two di ere
ish blonde hair, but not the platinum blonde hair I wanted. No one was willing to go that light for me, which is fair
almost untouched brown hair had gone through the ringer.

So, being the resourcefully, savvy and determined person that I am, I took to Google and discovered that it wasn’t
thought it would be. I was needing to go from pee yellow to almost white and I was (and am not) a professional. So
questioning, I went to my local Sally’s Beauty store and I bought some developer, bleach powder, and toner and se
blonde hair that I wanted.

This tutorial is really just how I do my touch ups, but the process is quite similar (if not a bit easier) with doing a ful

Now before I really get into the details, I want to say this… I know my hair. My original color is medium brown and
bleach. I also know how much bleach my hair can handle now before it starts to get burnt (melt). So PLEASE be car
have on your hair before you proceed, and make sure to not get too sloppy with leaving it in too long either becau
went a bit too long and has paid for it with really weak hair in that area.

NOW for the goods….

To achieve this platinum blonde hair there are a few things that you will need. First, you need the following ‘ingred

It’s one of the only oils that the bleach will penetrate through.

2. Part your hair into four sections like I have shown below. I’ve done it both ways, with and without doing this, and
helps to organize your hair.. and if you’re doing it yourself, it can get messy. (You could probably get it a bit neater
quickly.) NOTE:: I do two rounds of 20 volume developer bleaching, and what is shown in the picture below is after

4. This is the part where it will be a bit di erent from either doing your full head vs just roots, which really is just ho
 The method for application is the same for both, you just start from one of the sections and work your way aroun

my front are covered well but honestly, it almost doesn’t fully matter. Then just work your way through, using the b

6. Now, this is going to depend on your hair. I’m going to guess your hair isn’t going to lighten completely the rst r
lot lighter than mine). I’ve always done two rounds of this process before I tone, and that’s just because I know I ca
without getting too burnt the rst round. You’re wanting a very pale yellow like the color of the inside of a banana,
got in the rst pictures, my hair was not light enough to get to the matching color. The toner won’t make it lighter,
some of the yellow tone and even out the color. So you’ll have to make a call on this. If you do do it a second time,
going to get too far, and if you’re really nervous there’s a method called Bleach Bath, which is combining  1/2-1 par
(the nal mixture of both developer and lightener). This ‘waters down’ the bleach. This is the method I did originall
didn’t overdo it.

So if you’re going to do it the second time, my suggestion is to wait a day so it has time to rest….. or if you are desp
myself for it, then throw some more coconut oil over your head and start the process over again, and wash it with

7. Now, this step is the nal step that will seal and make that pretty platinum blonde hair color shine. You need to

8. Now, this is pretty straightforward to apply. Because your hair is a bit rough, apply it gently, but start applying fr

Hi! Yes I usually dry it and then reapply the coconut oil. I treat it as if I was nished (just witho
conditioner and dry it. Then reapply coconut oil and go at it again. I would suggest to wait ab
scalp cool down, but I’ve done it right away too so it’s up to you!

bleach my roots. I don’t need twice time to bleach my roots because in the rst round I have white roo
(blondme premium lift 9+) with 20 vol about 30-35 min and I don’t need a toner in my roots, sometime
have a little pale yellow. I would like to use the T18 but I’m so scary because in some pictures from oth
purple hair. I think it’s depends how long you leave it in your hair, right?… I was thinking use the toner

Hi Jill! Your post may have saved my life and my wallet!! I was even scheduled to get my hair done nex
get my hair like this for a while now and several stylists kept saying it would be hard, expensive, etc. so
did it last night.
I do have a couple questions! My hair is longer than yours and I had to try to color the whole head. So
could happen. How long should I wait to wash it to get the purple out? Also, have you ever had to tone
some parts near the ends aren’t as bright. Would it harm it to wait a few days and then tone it again?

Hi Chloee! That’s so great you were able to do it successfully and I’m happy it saved your wal
To answer your questions… the purple usually washes out whenever you usually wash your h
however long you wait to wash it (I wash mine ever other day) and it will slowly fade out.
For the long hair and re toning question.. I would say you could re do it, however I would wai
at least) just because you put your head through so much already, and the toner is like a per
on it again is like another processing. However, I’d say go for it if you want to try and lighten y
again maybe try and grab a 10 Developer to use with the toner (not sure if I have that written
started to do now which is a bit less harsher on the head.
I would also recommend buying a purple shampoo. I use mine at least 2 times a week….. wh
don’t know. I do notice it keeps it bright near the rst few weeks of me toning it.
But yah play around with it , and dont’ be worried about the purple, it fades always after 1 or
it’s doing it’s job well!

I realize your comment is a bit old now, but on the chance you have not proceeded
If you have permanent black color in your hair (especially years of it), you really wan
attempting to bleach; it will help remove some of the black dye with less oxidative s

• Avoid wrapping hair in towel or rubbing—gently shake out with ngers, squeeze e
pulling), pat roots and squeeze ends with micro ber or old cotton shirt
• Avoid hot tools + blow drying!
→ Make sure to properly prep hair with thermal protectant if necessary
• Try leave-in conditioner/oil/serum with coconut oil and dimethicone

→ Use soft paddle brush (boar recommended) if not washing daily to distribute oils
• Wait until your hair feels remotely normal again (smooth ends!)
• Use a color remover if still necessary
• Use beauty supply store products vs. boxed for more control
→ Use a high quality bleach if you want to be extra careful (e.g. Wella, Schwarzkopf)
supposed to be gentler and e ective; tubs are generally harshest (but popular)

Hi Jenn,
I think it would work ne if the bleach you have doesn’t have its own toner. I actually am goin
and just picked up some toner and developer the other day and toned it. So ya I’d say forget
color just go grab the wella t-18 and 10 volume developer (its less hard on your hair than 20
beauty and throw that in for 10-15 min. You don’t have to have dry hair no, I usually just get
and blow dry it a little. If it’s too dry the product will actually be more intense and then your h
ne. And I would say use the full bottle of toner this time and see how much product you nee
and didn’t need a full bottle of the toner so next time I wanna tone my whole head I’ll just do
how much you need.

Hello! Your hair color is gorgeous and exactly what I’m on a mission to do! I did 2 rounds of bleach a co
and purple shampoo was mildly satis ed but no where close to platinum, I was left with yellowish hair
Wella Toner 14, my hair is de nitely a lighter shade and looks even better. It’s now a light buttery colo
more bleach baths should I try, or should I wait a couple weeks and try another round of bleach? I gav
time so I will de nitely go in w coconut oil next time! I may try the t18 soon and see what I get with tha
