CORRESPONDENCE ANALYSIS Excel Add-In

What is it?

This Excel Add-In allows you to run a Correspondence Analysis to map rows and columns so that
rows are at the centroids of the columns and vice versa, weighted by the cell counts n the data
table.

Correspondence Analysis is a very popular space reduction technique in Europe (particularly in

France), but didn’t “stick” as much in the US.

The best source to learn about this technique is the original book by Benzecri (L'analyse Des
Donnees. Tome II: L'analyse Des Correspondances), which unfortunately (for the rest of us) was
published only in French. The best source in English is the book by Lebart and colleagues:

Lebart, L; Morineau, A; Warwick, K M (1984), Multivariate descriptive analysis: Correspondence

analysis and related techniques for large matrices, New York: Wiley& Sons, 304 pp

Is this for me?

Do you have a Pentium PC running Microsoft Office 2003 or older?

Do you have a working knowledge of Excel?
Have you ever taken a Marketing Research class?

If you answered yes to all three questions, this Add-in might be of interest to you.

How do I install it?

1. If you are reading this, you must have already unzipped the Correspondence Analysis.ZIP file
into a directory in your hard disk (for example, C:\Correspondence Analysis) . This directory
should contain the following files
README.DOC - this file
CORRESPONDENCE ANALYSIS.XLA - Excel Add-In file
CORRESPONDENCE ANALYSIS 2007.XLAM - Excel Add-In file
CORRESPDLL.DLL - dynamic link library used by the Add-In

2. Move the CORRESPDLL.DLL files to the Windows/System32 directory (or

Windows/System if you are using Windows 7).

3.a If you are using Office 2007, you should use Excel Options/ Addins/ Manage Addins and
point it to where the Correspondence Analysis 2007.xlam file is located. You then should be
ready to use the addin.

3.b if you are using Office 2003 or older, open the Excel spreadsheet containing the data to be
analyzed (or the example, if you wish), which should be at the same directory mentioned in step
1.
4. Select Tools in the menu, and drag the Add-Ins option.

Then, click on Browse, locate the CORRESPONDENCE ANALYSIS.XLA file and click the OK
button as shown below. This will automatically install it.
How do I use it?

 Your data should be in a Excel spreadsheet, with one row per case, and one column per
variable.

 The first row must contain some sort of description or label for each variable.

 The first column must contain some ID or name for each case.

 This demo is limited to a sample of 900 rows and 50 columns.

To run the analysis, highlight the range containing the data, making sure to include the
first column (respondent ID) and first row (variable labels). Then select Tools =>
Correspondence Analysis.
