Sharks have gained an unfair reputation for being fierce predators of large sea animals. Humanity's unfounded fear
and hatred of these ancient creatures is leading to a worldwide slaughter that may result in the extinction of many
coastal shark species. The shark is the victim of a warped attitude of wildlife protection; we strive only to protect
the beautiful, non- threatening parts of our environment. And, in our efforts to restore only non- threatening parts
of our earth, we ignore the other important parts.
A perfect illustration of this attitude is the contrasting attitude toward another large sea animal, the dolphin.
During the 1980s, the environmentalists in the U.S protested the use of driftnets for tuna fishing in the Pacific
Ocean since these nets also caught dolphins. The environmentalists generated enough political and economic
pressure to prevent tuna companies from buying tuna that had been caught in driftnets. In contrast to this effort on
behalf of the dolphins, these same environmentalists have done very little to help save the Pacific Ocean sharks
whose population has decreased nearly to the point of extinction. Sharks are among the oldest creatures on earth,
having survived in the seas for more than 350 million years. They are extremely efficient animals, feeding on
wounded or dying animals, thus performing an important role in nature of weeding out the weaker animals in a
species. Just the fact that species such as the Great white Shark have managed to live in the oceans for so many
millions of years is enough proof of their efficiency and adaptability to changing environments. It is time for us
humans, who may not survive another 1, 000 years at the rate we are damaging the planet, to dispel our fears and
begin considering the protection of sharks as an important part of a program for protection of all our natural
environment.

PART 2: For question from 66- 75, read the passage carefully then choose the correct option A,B, C or D to
answer the questions. Write the answers in the numbered box. (1pt)
The first two decades of this century were dominated by the microbe hunters. These hunters had tracked down one
after another of the microbes responsible for the most dreaded scourges of many centuries: tuberculosis, cholera,
diphtheria. But there, remained some terrible diseases for which no microbe could be incriminated: scurvy,
pellagra, rickets, beriberi. Then it was discovered that these diseases were caused by the lack of vitamins, a trace
substance in the diet. The diseases could be prevented or cured by consuming foods that contained the vitamins.
And so in the decades of the 1920’s and 1930’s, nutrition became a science and the vitamin hunters replaced the
microbe hunters.
In the 1940’s and 1950’s, biochemists strived to learn why each of the vitamins was essential for health. They
discovered that key enzymes in metabolism depend on one or another of the vitamins as coenzymes to perform the
chemistry that provides cells with energy for growth and function. Now, these enzyme hunters occupied center
stage.
You are aware that the enzyme hunters have been replaced by a new breed of hunters who are tracking genes-the
blueprints for each of the enzymes-and are discovering the defective genes that cause inherited diseases-diabetes,
cystic fibrosis. These gene hunters, or genetic engineers, use recombinant DNA technology to identify and clone
genes and introduce them into bacterial cells and plants to create factories for the massive production of hormones
and vaccines for medicine and for better crops for agriculture. Biotechnology has become a multibillion-dollar
industry.
In view of the inexorable progress in science, we can expect that the gene hunters will be replaced in the spotlight.
When and by whom? Which kind of hunter will dominate the scene in the last decade of our waning century and in
the early decades of the next? I wonder whether the hunters who will be neurobiologists who apply the techniques
of the enzyme occupy the spotlight and gene hunters to the functions of the brain: What to call them? The head
hunters, I will return to them later.
