Flipped Lecture 8

Discussione 18 february 2020

1. Minimize, if possible, the function

f (x, y) = 5x2 + xy + y 2 − 4x + 3y − 5.

2. Can the previous function be globally maximized? Draw a contour plot

in the domain [−3, 3] × [−3, 3]. Which is the maximum value attained
by the function in that domain?

3. Let f the function

x2 + xy + y 2 2 2
+ e−x +2x + e−y +2y .
6
Plot the contour levels of f and find its global minimum.

4. Can you guess the location of several saddle points in the contour plot
relative to the previous function? [Hint: circles and crosses... even if
there are no crosses!]

5. Consider the line y = −0.25 (adding it to the plot would help). Which
is the minimum value of the previous function on the points of the line?
Is this a constrained problem? Do you need to solve an optimization
problem with two variables?
