A relation is simply a set of ordered pairs.
The domain refers to all of the xvalues.
The range refers to all of the yvalues.
A function is a relation in which each member of the ____________ is paired with
one and only one member of the ____________. (x-values cannot repeat!)

Draw a few vertical lines on the graph.
Does each line pass through the graph only once?
YES NO

Function Notation
Function Notation, f (x ) , is basically instead of saying something like y = mx + b , we
say f ( x ) = mx + b . This is saying that the result of mx + b is a “function of x”. The x
value represents the domain and the answer (the y – value) represents the range.
So when they ask us to determine the value of f ( 2 ) in the function: f ( x ) = 3x + 1 ,
we simply plug 2 into the equation in the “x” spot.
f ( 2) = 3 ( 2 ) + 1
f ( 2) = 6 + 1
f ( 2) = 7
Let’s try some:
9) Determine the value of f ( 5 ) in the 10) Determine the value of f ( -6 ) in the
function f ( x ) = -3x - 4 . Don’tfunction f ( x ) = 2x ² + 3x - 1 .

♣ Parabolas are graphs of quadratic (x2) equations.
Quadratic equation in standard form: y = ax 2 + bx + c

Axis of
The axis of symmetry (AOS) is a line that cuts the parabola in half so the two
Symmetry
sides are mirror images.
When we graph we want to know where this spot is so that we build our table
around it and end up with a graph that shows us the whole parabola.
Vertex
To make the table, put the AOS value f ( x)
x
in the middle of the x column, then
three values smaller and three values
larger.

For example:
We are used to writing linear equations as y = 3x + 1
We now know that lines written like that are functions and CAN be written as f (x) = 3x + 1
We know that y is the same as f(x)
So, ( x , y ) is the same as ( x , f ( x ) )
f ( x ) = { ( x ,3x + 1 ) x is real}
Graph these functions given in Set Builder Notation.
