RBI 580 –API EXAM TIPS

RISK based INSPECTION is dealt by API 580

Risk= POF X COF or LOF x COF

POF means probability of failure, LOF means likely hood of failure, COF means Consequence
of Failure

Based on the Unmitigated RISK, Risk is classified into Low Risk Equipments, Medium Risk
Equipments, High Risk Equipments

RBI is based on the relative risks

Risk can never be eliminated. That minimum risk is called Residual risk

Low Risk can be managed with Less number of inspections

Inspections canot directly reduce the risk. It can only manage the risk

But High Risk items need more efficient & more number of inspection

Probability side of Risk Eqn is managed by Inspection Personals

Consequence side of the Risk Eqn is dealt by the management Personnel’s

RBI will not directly reduce the inspection cost. But You can get sufficient details to increase
the safety & Indirectly reduce the inspection cost

Consequence depend on the volume of the fluid released & toxicity of the fluid

Here failure means the Loss of containment

As far RBI is concerned Consequence are always Negative

Source in RBI context is a Hazard

Risk assessment can be Qualitative, Semi Quantitative & quantitative

Qualitative needs better Engineering Judgment But Less Data

But Quantitative is accurate & Costly & needs Expert Opinion

But We maximum prefer Semi quantitative

Documentation is VVI for RBI

Capturing time frame is important for RBI
