It would be most economical if "uncompensated long overhead t/r line is loaded above SIL"and

"underground cable is loaded below SIL" .

Over Head transmission line:

For the loading less than "SIL(surge impedance loading)" the impedance is more than the surge
impedance "Zc"(as SIL is equal to V^2/R),Therefore the electrostatic energy will be more than
electromagnetic energy which mean that the capacitance should be high so the distance between
conductors should be low as "C" is inversely proportional to "d" then the distance b/w poles should be
less so for given length of line more poles are to be provided which is uneconomical.

Under Ground Cables:

coming to underground cables the long length cables are generally not advisable because as the distance
b/ w cable to cable and cable to earth are very small so due to this, the capacitance of cable will be much
higher than the inductance.due to high capacitance(charging currents) we have the following effects:

1.predominant voltage rise at receiving end(ferranti effect) which may pose problems for insulation

2.as C raises Zc decrease then the SIL will rise which will be greater than thermal loadability limit
therefore if cable is loaded greater than or equal to SIL the thermal limit is already crossed so the
insulation may break down due to excess heat,so the loading should be less than SIL.
