Job Title:
Public Interest Lawyer

Brief Summary:
Represent individual clients who cannot afford private legal representation through legal aid
organizations or other nonprofits, in criminal and civil litigation and other legal proceedings. Draw up
legal documents or manage or advise these clients on legal transactions. Involved in drafting and
promoting legislation to reform the legal process.

Work Activities:
 Represent clients in court or before government agencies.
 Study Constitution, statutes, decisions, regulations, and ordinances of quasi-judicial bodies to
determine ramifications for cases.
 Analyze the probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents.
 Prepare, draft, and review legal documents, such as wills, deeds, patent applications, mortgages,
leases, and contracts.
 Argue motions, meet with judges, and question witnesses during the course of a trial.
 Interpret laws, rulings and regulations for individuals and businesses.
 Present evidence to defend clients or prosecute defendants in criminal or civil litigation.
 Represent clients in court or before government agencies.
 Present and summarize cases to judges and juries.
 Negotiate settlements of civil disputes.

Work Context:

Work Schedule  Often work long hours. It is common for lawyers to work more than 50
hours a week.
 Generally, work a set schedule (i.e. commonly works from 7:00 AM to
7:00 PM everyday)
 May travel to clients' homes or places of business.
Interpersonal  Communicate by telephone, e-mail, letters, memos, and in person on a

supervisor before deciding a course of action.

 Work in a competitive atmosphere. They must abide by strict daily deadlines.

Pay Grade (2020) 31,300 PHP (lowest) to 108,000 PHP (highest)
Median Wage (2020) 68,100 PHP per month

Job Competencies:

Education  Minimum degree attained should be post-graduate


 Should be a hold either a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)
Licensure  Must pass the Philippine Bar Examination, administered by the Supreme Court of
the Philippines

government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
o English and Filipino Language — Knowledge of the structure and content of the English and
Filipino language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and

o Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing
customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality
standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
o Administration and Management — Knowledge of business and management principles
involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership
technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
o Personnel and Human Resources — Knowledge of principles and procedures for personnel
recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, labor relations and negotiation,
and personnel information systems.
o Economics and Accounting — Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices,
the financial markets, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data.

o Communications and Media — Knowledge of media production, communication, and
dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain
via written, oral, and visual media.
