While you are gone we will be covering in class:

o Canadian contribution/Canadian National Interest (Assignment)

 Interwar Period
 Ultra-Nationalism
o We will be beginning Ultra-Nationalism when you are coming back, you’ll likely
only miss 1-2 days on this.

There are two assignments that I want you to have completed for when you come back. These
assignments are due April 9th. This date is non-negotiable, as you are leaving again on another
trip later that week.

1. The first assignment will be completing a mind map with a rationale attached. This
mind map will have the central idea in the middle as “National Interest”.
a. While you create this mind-map consider the key events that are discussed during
WWI (these events will have a on the PowerPoint slide for you to consider.
b. Once you have identified all the main events and key parts of WWI in the slide
show you are going to make a mind map, including all the slides with a star.
c. You will also include a 200-word rationale as to why WWI is an example of
national interest. You may pick a specific event to talk about to showcase your
understanding, or you may talk about the topic generally.
d. I have provided paper in this package for you to complete the mind-map on.

2. The second assignment you must complete is a letter and two postcards. This
assignment is to gather your understanding of Canadian national interest during WWI
through the eyes of a soldier on the western front. In class we will be studying four key
battles that Canadians fought in: Somme, Passchendaele, Vimy Ridge, Ypres.
a. In class we will be doing a jigsaw activity following a short lecture on these
different battles.
b. You will be responsible to review the PowerPoint on these battles, as well as
check out the Canadian War Museum website, as the website explains each of
these battles in detail.
i. Canadian War Museum (see on the left-hand side menu, the other three
battles listed above)
c. On the attached assignment there is a rubric and instructions, please review
this both to ensure that you have met the criteria of the assignment.
