Making Measurement (Part 1)

Measuring Length and Volume

Wooden Block

Use ruler for the diameter

1. Wooden Block

Use wooden block to cover opposite sides of the glass test-tube and then use the ruler
to tell the diameter of the test tube.
Precaution: Make sure that when you measure it, the wooden blocks don’t move.

2.
To find the length in the centre of the load you have to find the radius of the load by
knowing the differences in length of the left side and the right side of the load which
here says:
Left side: 68.5 cm
71.5 – 68.5 = 3 cm
Right side: 71.5 cm
Diameter of the load is 3 cm so the radius is 1.5 cm
So, to find the centre length you can either subtract 71.5 with 1.5 or add 68.5 with 1.5
It will make the same answer which is 70 cm.
Scale reading: 70 cm
3.
a.) Parallax only happens when you don’t see the measurement aligned and you just see
the measurement of a ruler from any place instead of doing it the right way which is
that your eyes have to be aligned with the measurement.
b.)
measuring the period of the pendulum:
Use a stopwatch and determine how many seconds does he want to test (can be
whatever). Then count how many oscillations happened for that period of time. After
counting the oscillations, divide the amount of time that he picked by how many
oscillations happened. The answer is the period for that pendulum. Repeat the process
for about 5 times so that the results will be more reliable and accurate. This method is
more accurate than others because doing this you will repeat the process for at least 5
times which makes it more accurate and reliable.
c.) In the following list, mark the possible variables with the letter V and the precautions
with the letter P.
V
amplitude of swing
V
length of pendulum
V
mass of pendulum bob
V
shape of pendulum bob
P
use of a reference point to aid counting
P
viewing the rule at right-angles when measuring the
length
