OPEN SCIENCE
§ Open science is the movement to make scientific research and its dissemination
accessible to all levels of an inquiring society, amateur or professional. Open
science is transparent and accessible knowledge that is shared and developed
through collaborative networks.
From: Wikipedia

§ Open Science, the movement to make scientific products and processes

accessible to and reusable by all, is about culture and knowledge as much as it
is about technologies and services. Convincing researchers of the benefits of
changing their practices, and equipping them with the skills and knowledge
needed to do so, is hence an important task.

DEFINITION OF OPEN ACCESS

§ Open Access (OA) to the results of scien9fic research means that anyone,
anywhere has online access without financial, legal, or technical barriers.
§ We define open access journals as journals that use a new funding/business
model that does not charge readers or their ins9tu9ons for access.

§ Open Access (in line with the Budapest Open Access Ini9a9ve) can be defined as
the free availability of research and scholarly outputs on the public internet
permiKng users to make any lawful and non-commercial use of the research
material(s) without any legal, technical or financial barriers other than the
acknowledgement of the right of the author(s).

SCIENTIFIC PUBLISHING AND OPEN ACCESS

Non OA journals
§ Readers pay to read ar@cles, through a subscrip@on or a one-@me fee. All
ar@cles in the journal are non-OA.

Hybrid journals
§ Authors pay if they want their ar@cle published OA. The percentage of OA
ar@cles in the journal varies per issue

OA journals
§ Authors pay to publish; all ar@cles in the journals are OA. Also knows as Gold
OA.

COSTS OF OA PUBLIHSING

§ An Ar2cle Processing Charge (APC) covers peer review, manuscript prepara2on

and server space.

§ APCs vary by journal, and are much higher for hybrid journals than for OA
journals.

OPEN ACCESS CONSEQUENCES FOR
LOW AND MIDDLE INCOME COUNTRIES
§ An increasing number of researchers in developing countries are turning to open access
for the publication of their research. It will ensure that research is accessible to a much
wider audience than if it were behind a paywall.
§ However, the fact that many scientists in developing countries struggle to get their work
published in international journals is a cause for concern.
§ Costs for publishing now have to be paid by the researchers
§ Many universities are able to cover these costs for their academics, but universities in
low-and-middle-income countries are not
§ Publishers can play a role in this by waiving the charges for researchers in poorer
countries. Moreover, academics can incorporate their publishing costs when applying for
funding.

PREDATORY PUBLISHERS

§ With the start of open-access publishing also the predatory publishers came
into existence.

§ Journals that exploit the author-pays model damage scholarly publishing and
promote unethical behaviour by scienIsts, argues Jeffrey Beall. Jeffrey Beall is
Scholarly IniIaIves Librarian at the University of Colorado Denver. His website
"Beals list" started out as a place to find predatory publishers but also caused
discussion.

PLAN S
§ Plan S is an initiative for Open Access publishing that was launched in
September 2018. The plan is supported by cOAlition S, an international
consortium of research funders.
§ Plan S requires that, from 2020, scientific publications that result from research
funded by public grants must be published in compliant Open Access journals
or platforms.
§ The coalition of research funders that have committed to implement Plan S,
known as cOAlition S, therefore calls for a definitive shift towards new models
of academic publishing.
§ In 2023 cOAlition S will review the effects of Plan S on achieving a transition to
full and immediate OA

Springer Open Books
§ In August 2012, the growing demand for open access publishing led Springer to
expand their open access program to fully open access books as a further
addiAon to their SpringerOpen journal porColio.
§ Springer Open Books are published under the CreaAve Commons AGribuAon

HOW TO FIND FULL TEXT ARTICLES: UNPAYWALL

Get full-text of research papers as you browse, using

Unpaywall's index of 10 million legal, open access articles.
For CHROME | Firefox
http://unpaywall.org/
§ What it is: Unpaywall is a browser plugin that enables you to
easily (i.e., instantly) find Open Access versions of otherwise
paywalled research papers.
§ Why it’s great for research: That should be pretty much self-
explanatory, but on top of that Unpaywall also only gathers
content from legal sources.

HOW TO FIND FULL TEXT ARTICLES: Sci-Hub

If all else fails, you may be tempted to use Sci-Hub.

Do realize, however, that in many countries the use of Sci-Hub is
considered as an illegal act, as it involves content protected by copyright
laws and licensing contracts.

Alternatives to the publisher version of full-text
journal articles: REQUEST COPY VIA AUTHOR

You can always request a copy directly from the author; often not
the fastest way, but traditionally a well-used route to get pdf’s.
Many researchers have joined the social network for scientists
ResearchGate. And many make their pdf's available inside
ResearchGate for download, or offer the option to request it from
the author.

Alternatives to the publisher version of full-text
journal articles: MICROSOFT ACADEMIC

Microsoft Academic understands the meaning of words, it doesn’t

just match keywords to content. For example, when you type
“Microsoft,” it knows you mean the institution, and shows you
papers authored by researchers affiliated with Microsoft. Similarly,
Microsoft Academic knows journal titles, conference names, and
many research topics. Try these queries to understand the power
of semantic search and unleash it yourself!
