Paper-I Theoretical Survey & Scientific Study of Indian Music (Instrumental).

Time 3 hrs. Maximum Marks : 75


Pass Marks : 35% Total Teaching Hours : 65
Internal Assessment 25 Marks
Instructions for the paper-setter:

The question paper will consist of three sections : A, B & C. Section A &B will have 04
questions each from the respective sections of the syllabus and will carry 12 marks each. Section
C is compulsory of 09 short answers type questions, covering the entire syllabus uniformly and
will carry 27 (9x3) marks in all.

INSTRUCTIONS FROR THE CANDIDATES

Candidates are required to attempt two questions each from the sections A & B and the entire
Section C is compulsory.

1. Study of the following technical terms of music: Alap, Jod, Meend, Krintan, Jamjama, Akarsh-
Apkarsh, Ghaseet, Jhala, Tora , Lag-Dat.

2. Study of classification of Indian musical instruments and new possibilities.

3. Study of Shruti in ancient, medieval and modern periods.

4. Shadaj Pancham and Shadaj Madhyama Bhava (cycles of the Fourths and Fifths).

5. Swar Sthapana on Veena according to: (i) Pt. Ahobal (ii) Pt. Shri Niwas (iii) Acharya
Brihaspati, (iv) Dr. Lal Mani Mishra.
6. Origin and development the following Gayan-Shailies : Dhrupad , Dhamar and Khyal
7. Evolution of notation system, its merits and demerits.
8. Introduction to the Western Notation System.

Instruction for the Examiners

The Examination will be conducted by a Board of Examiners consisting of Head of the dertment/nominee,
internal teacher and external expert as per decision of the Syndicate 25-10-91 (Para 2, 3).

(A) The candidate has to choose one raag out of the ragas prescribed in paper IV with Alap, Jor Alap, Jor
Jhala, Vilambit, Drut Gat and Jhala. Marks 40.
(B) A Gat Vadan in any Taal other than teen taal in except the raga selected for performance.

(C) A Dhun Vadan Marks 10
(D) Demonstration of the following taals on hand in ekgun, dugun and chaugun layakaries and on tabla in
ekgun: Teen Taal, Ek Taal, Jhap Taal and Dhamar Taal Marks 10

Paper IV Viva-Voce (Music Instrumental)


Total Teaching Hours : 65 Maximum Marks : 75 Pass
Marks : 35% Internal Assessment 25 Marks

Instruction for the Examiners

The Examination will be conducted by a Board of Examiners consisting of Head of the


department/nominee, internal teacher and external expert as per decision of the Syndicate 25-10-91 (Para
2, 3).
(I) From the following Ragas, one Vilambit Gat is compulsory, other than the raga selected
for stage performance, Drut Gats have to be done in all the ragas:
Bageshri, Bhairav, Chander Kauns, Bhimplasi, Yaman , Jog. Marks 65
(II) Ability to sing five Alankars while playing harmonium in any four thaats. Marks 10

Instruction for the Examiners


The Examination will be conducted by a Board of Examiners consisting of Head of the
department/nominee, internal teacher and external expert as per decision of the Syndicate 25-10-91 (Para 2, 3).
From the following Ragas one Vilambit Gat is compulsory, other than the raga selected for stage
Performance, Drut Gats have to be done in all the ragas. Marks should be awarded on the basis of Performance and
Viva-Voce.
