Properties of matter can be classified as physical or chemical. Physical

properties can be observed without any changes in its composition such as hardness,
brittleness, flexibility, elasticity, conductivity, malleability, and ductility. On the other
hand, chemical properties are characteristics that can only be observed when the
composition of materials has changed. Combustibility, flammability, and
biodegradability are some examples of chemical properties.

17
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER

• Transforming form one state of matter without changing its composition.

These are the different properties of matter.

Hardness is the ability of a material to nr rigid and resist pressure

that may cause deformation or change in its shape.

Brittleness is the ability of solid materials that when subjected to

high pressure or stress, they tend to crumble or break easily

ex. Glass porcelain mirror

Flexibility is the ability of a material to be bent without breaking.

ex. thin metal wires plastic strings

Elasticity is the ability of a material to be stretched and the return to

its original form

ex. rubber band garter

Conductivity is the ability of a material to allow heat and electricity

to pass through it.

ex. metal copper wire

Malleability is the ability of a material to be formed into different shapes.

e.x gold aluminium silver

Ductility is the ability of a material to be drawn into thin wires.

ex. electrical wires

Porosity is the ability of a material to absorb liquid well.

ex. paper cloth

Physical properties can be observed without any changes in its
composition such as hardness, brittleness, flexibility, elasticity,
conductivity, malleability, and ductility.

On the other hand, chemical properties are characteristics that can

only be observed when the composition of materials has changed.
Combustibility, flammability, and biodegradability are some examples of
chemical properties.

These changes help us to understand how things are use in a

manner of how it reacts to certain factors like heat, fire and outside forces
that change its physical attributes.

Moreover, knowing its components make us more aware of their life

span and how to reuse, reduce or even recycle them.

Lastly, the main idea of this topic is to save our planet earth form

products that slowly destroy our mother earth

microorganisms

• Ductility * ability to be drawn into wires

• Combustibility * ability to be hammered in to sheets

• Conductivity * ability to resist pressure that my cause

deformation

• Brittleness * ability to break easily

• Combustibility

• Biodegradability

25
This module is about matter. Particularly, it discusses the different
properties of material that can make it useful or harmful to us. This would also
tackle the changes in matter due to oxygen and heat.

Properties of matter can be classified as physical or chemical. Physical

properties can be observed without any changes in its composition such as
hardness, brittleness, flexibility, elasticity, conductivity, malleability, and
ductility. On the other hand, chemical properties are characteristics that can
only be observed when the composition of materials has changed.
Combustibility, flammability, and biodegradability are some examples of
chemical properties.

Matter undergoes changes. This can either be physical or chemical

change. Physical changes happen when material change its size, shape, or
form. When the composition of the material is altered, chemical change occurs.
The formation of a new product, formation of gas, release or absorption of heat
and formation or precipitate are some evidences of chemical change. With
these changes, it can help us to manage and minimize waste.

Matter also has individual characteristics that can help us identify the
value of a particular material. Some materials can still be reused. Some must
be discarded with extra care for it may cause harm to the environment if not
disposed properly. Understanding the different properties of matter may help
us in minimizing waste production. Practicing 5R’s –reduce, reuse, recycle,
recover and repair-are some techniques that can be used for waste
management.

A. Directions: Write TRUE if the underlined word is correct and FALSE if it is not.

__________ 1. Useful material is a material that serves its purpose.

__________ 2. Harmful material is a material that can cause injury.

__________ 3. Reuse means lessening the amount of waste in the environment.

__________ 4. Reduce involves the creation of a new product from a material that has

already served its purpose.

26
__________ 5. Steel is a strong material used in buildings.

__________ 6. Rubber band is an example of elastcity.

__________ 7. Combustion has four things needed.

__________ 8. Moisture and humidity of the surrounding are the two factors that

influence the formation of rust.

__________ 9. Burning of wood is an example of physical change.

__________ 10. Melting of an ice cube is an example of chemical change.

B. Directions: Read and understand the following questions. Choose the letter of the
correct answer and write it on the line.

__________ 1. Gold can be shaped into rings. What property does gold have?

a. brittleness c. hardness
b. elasticity d. malleability

__________ 2. Wood can be made into chopping boards. What property does wood
have?

a. brittleness c. hardness
b. elasticity d. softness

__________ 3. Rubber bands can be used to secure things tightly because they can
be stretched and can go back to their original shape. What property
does rubber band have?

a. brittleness c. hardness
b. elasticity d. softness

__________ 4. Which example of solid material does not belong to the group?

a. gold bracelet c. plastic spoon

b. iron nail d. silver ring
