Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to Mathematics – Grade 5 Self-Learning Module (SLM).

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both from
public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the needed
21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the module:

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also need
to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore,
you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to Mathematics-Grade 5 Self-Learning Module (SLM).

Preface
Dear Pupils,
This module, Mathematics 5 Quarter 4-Module 5 is written to further enhance
your critical thinking and develop the love of Mathematics. This acquired skill would
soon be applied in your everyday lives.

This module covers the concepts of Temperature. This topic is presented is

such a way that they are easy to understand and visualize.

The following are the special and unique features of this module:
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW. This part presents the competency or the
objective that each learner should know and master.

WHAT’S NEW. This part of the module presents the content input of the topic
that will be discussed.

WHAT IS IT. This contains the discussions of the topic which include
illustrative examples of the lesson.

WHAT’S MORE. In this part, the first activity will be given to each learner.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED. Another activity will be answered by the pupils.

ASSESSMENT. This is the last part of each topic in which another activity will
be given and answered by the learners to assess if each of them learned and
mastered the skill.
“Learning Mathematics is fun. It is not as difficult as you think. We
hope this module can help you explore the world of mathematical
concept in relation to your everyday life.”

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to indulge
you in discovering and generating patterns. The scope of this module permits
it to be used in many different learning situations. Recognizing and extending
patterns are important skills needed to the learning of concepts related to
sequences. The arrangement of the lessons follows the standard sequence of
the course. But the pacing in which you read and answer this module is
dependent on your ability.

The most essential learning competency/ies aligned in this module is/are:

1. read and measure temperature using thermometer (alcohol
and/or digital) in degree Celsius; and
2. solve routine and non-routine problems involving temperature in
real-life situations.
Primarily, the scope of this module is to develop your skill in generating
patterns. While going through this module, you are expected to:
1. read and measure temperature using thermometer (alcohol and/or
digital) in degree Celsius,
2. estimate the temperature,
3. solve routine and non-routine problems involving temperature in
real-life situations; and
4. create problems involving temperature, with reasonable answers.

WHAT’S IN

The teacher noticed that Aliyah was not feeling well during their Math class so
she was sent to their clinic. At the clinic, after her body temperature was
checked, her parents were asked to come and fetch her so she can go home.
What do you think is her body temperature that she was asked to go home?

What’s New

The normal body temperature is 37°C (read as #7 degree Celsius). The

reading might have been greater than 37°C that is why she was sent home.

The thermometer was developed over time. The idea of measuring

temperature started in AD 170 by a Greek scientist and physician Galen. In
1953, renowned scientist Galileo Galilei developed the thermoscope. This
device can show the difference in temperature but it cannot tell exactly the
difference. It is a thermometer without a scale.
Several decades later, Italian inventor Santorio Santorio placed a scale
in Galileo’s invention and it was used to take human temperature. From then
on, the device was further developed to become more accurate and user-
friendly.

What Is It

Temperature is the hotness or coldness of an object. It can be expressed in

“degrees Celsius” (°C).
The instrument used in measuring temperature is the thermometer. A
thermometer has two important elements: the temperature sensor and the
scale. The temperature sensor is the bulb, while the scale shows the
temperature. The two common liquids inside the scale that goes up and down
as the temperature changes are alcohol and mercury. Look at the
thermometer, what temperature does it show? The top of the red bar is
pointing at 70 so the temperature is 70°C.

SAFETY MEASURES in Handling Thermometer Using Mercury

 The thermometer should be washed before and after use.
 Shake the thermometer a few times to bring the level of mercury down.
 Do not hold the thermometer by its bulb.
 Keep the mercury level along your line of sight and then take the reading.
 Handle the thermometer with care. Avoid hitting it against some hard object, it
may break.
 Do not place the thermometer in a hot flame or in the hot sun.

What’s More
You can tell the temperature by reading a thermometer.

The red liquid inside the

thermometer tells you the
temperature.

As the temperature gets hotter, the

red liquid rises.

As the temperature gets colder,the

red liquid drops.

Example 1
Take a look at this thermometer:

What is the temperature?

4

To read the thermometer, find the number where the red liquid is level with.

The red bar is at 10°C.

What I Have Learned

Encircle the better estimate for the following temperature:

GIVEN A B

1. Room temperature 22°C 41°C

2. A cup of hot soup 14°C 77°C

3. Swim at the beach 7°C 26°C

4. Ice cubes -2°C 37°C

5. One sunny day 31°C -10°C

5
6

Assessment
Shade the thermometer based on the indicated temperature.
7

Additional Activities

Solve the following problems;

1. The level of temperature of liquid in a thermometer is 26.52°C lower than

the boiling point of water. What is the thermometer reading?

2. Mang Insyong went to his laboratory at 7:00 AM and recorded that the
temperature was 11.07°C. At lunch time, the temperature rose by 27.9°C
but dropped by 8.05°C at 5:00 PM. What was the temperature at
5:00PM?

3. Karl boiled the meat that he needs for his recipe and he let it cool for 20
minutes. After that, he measured its temperature and got 62°C. How
many degrees did the meat’s temperature go down after boiling?
