DOST 02 VALUES RESTORATION PROGRAM

WEEK 10: SELFLESSNESS

"Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their
cross and follow me."
(Matthew 16:24}

Esteeming others better is unimaginable for someone who thinks he/she knows better. This is because our
human nature is predisposed to demanding what rightfully belongs to us, instead of just letting go and letting
God promote us in His time. Many of us are becoming accustomed to being recognized for our
accomplishments, which explains the flourishing of the advertising industry nowadays.

Take a look. Posters and tarpaulins proliferate everywhere, making known to the public the names and faces of
board and bar passers, university qualifiers, scholarship grantees, and quite alarmingly, even birthday
celebrants. What used to be considered as private matters are now blatantly publicized all over socia l
networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and lnstagram. While people of old would be so careful not to brag
about their noteworthy achievements, people today have become so imprudent in declaring to the world
every movement they make, no matter how silly, mindless, and inappropriate those can be. The Bible
describes this as the time when men will become lovers of themselves, boasters, and proud.

Such egotism has caused many people to live superficial lives and beget even greater vanity, ea ming money
they don't have to spend on things they don't need with people that they don't like. They have succumbed to
the dictates of consumerism and begun purchasing houses they won't live in, clothes they won't wear, gadgets
they won't use, and food they won't eat. They would go to parties and pretend to take pleasure in the noise,
satisfy their palate, or enjoy the company of equally superficial people they abhor in truth - all for self-image,
self-esteem, and self- confidence and all because they have forgotten to find their true identity in God .

Finding our identity in God will make our life more simple and unpretentious. It will cause us to choose only
what is essential and truly lasting and forsake those that are only skin deep or temporal. We can be freed from
the threat of rejection or the pain of abandonment by dying to and denying ourselves of the pleasure,
recognition, and glory that this world can offer. We will no longer care if people pay tribute to us or honor us
for our works; all we will care about is whether God is pleased with our thoughts and actions . If such
selflessness prevails in the nation, we can expect commercialism to shut down and stop sucking our blood;
there will be no more fierce rivalry or competitions that lead to mudslinging or divide the people . All we will
have is peace and solidarity, concern for the people and genuine public service.

ACTION PLAN
1. Cut down on your vanity expenses such as designer clothes, bags, shoes, etc. Settle for products with
the same quality but lesser price. Better yet, buy locally made products to supports Filipino industries
like those in DOST's OneStore.

2. Minimize you visits to malls and amusement centers. Instead of eating at food chains or expensive
restaurants, bring your own food and go to theme parks. This way, you can also inculcate the value of
concern for the environment to your children.

3- Be creative when celebrating birthdays and other family events. Instead of paying for catering, cook
your food. Celebration doesn't have to be extravagant to be meaningful. Remember that as long as
there is love and sincerity in your gesture, it will always strike the heart of the persons to whom you
are dedicating it.

4. Stop being too conscious about the way you look and the way other people regard you . What truly
matters in the end is your character. You will know who your true friends are by being the simple yo u.
Those who cannot stick around when tough times come are not your friends . Avoid them .

5. Ask those around you to avoid publicizing your achievements . One day, your being too entangled with
the praises of men will become the same snare that will keep you from do ing what is unpopula r,
albeit right and just.

DECLARATION
I am a selfless person. I shall be objective in handling my affairs with other people, and as long as I know that
my actions are true, noble, and fair. I shall never be affected by those who will not receive the positive. I sha ll
not allow myself to be pressured by my peers or colleagues into doing what is popular but wrong. I shall not
compromise my convictions just to earn the praises of men or the approval of the majority. I shall never be too
conscious about my image and how people regard me, or live in pretention and superficially just to get along
well with the rich and the famous.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I thank you for making me realize the need to deny myself if I were to follow you. I
understand the difficulty of maintaining anonymity while labouring over good works worthy to be proclaimed
to the whole world. Likewise, I understand how hard it is to deny myself of the things which I have accustomed
myself to, such as dressing up, dining out, or hanging out in extravagance. Thus, I ask you to give me the grace
to set my mind on things above and not on earthly and temporal, as I know that it is only by identifying myself
with you and your love can I be set free from the dictates of the world. Grant me the ability to put your will
first before anything else, as this is the standard of righteous and Godly living. Let me not succumb to the
pressure of pleasing others but compromising what is right, noble, and just. Teach me how to live selflessly and
without the predisposition to be popular and accepted. Amen.
