Fully Funded MA Programs in Philosophy

The University of Toledo funds many of their MA in philosophy students

Here is a list of universities that offer full funding for an M.A. in Philosophy. M.A.s in Philosophy have a variety of
career options, including teaching, writing in a variety of contexts, and further academic work.
Fully-funded M.A. programs can be difficult to find. Because most universities focus their funding on Ph.D.
students, M.A. candidates can have a harder time securing scholarships and funding. However, there are a
number of universities that do offer funded M.A. programs. “Full funding” is a financial aid package for full-time
students that includes full tuition remission and an annual stipend or salary for the duration of the student’s
master’s studies. Funding is typically offered in exchange for graduate teaching and research work that is
complementary to your studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their master’s students, which is why I
recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential M.A. programs in your academic field,
including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Colorado State University (Fort Collins, CO): Each year, the department offers 6-7 graduate teaching
assistantships to incoming graduate students.  These funding packages cover tuition, health insurance, and a
monthly stipend.
Florida State University (Tallahassee, FL): In recent years, all admitted students on both the M.A. track and the
Ph.D. track have been fully funded. Funding includes a tuition waiver and a stipend, as well as payment of the
health insurance premium.

Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA): The Department offers a funding package to every graduate student it
admits to the M.A. program. Every funding package includes subsidized health insurance and a full waiver of
tuition (which in 2016-17 was $4,680/semester for Georgia residents and $15,012/semester for out-of-state
residents). Students must still pay fees, about $1,000/semester.
Indiana University(Indianapolis, IN): A limited number of graduate assistantships are available for new or
returning students each academic year. Each assistantship includes a $9,000 stipend, health & dental insurance,
and a waiver of most tuition fees.
Kent State University (Kent, OH): A limited number of graduate assistantships (with competitive stipends) and
tuition/fee waivers are available for graduate students. In the past, most students have received financial aid.
During 2018–19, the total financial aid award per student is approximately $25,500, which includes a $12,500
stipend, a full tuition waiver worth $12,000, a health insurance subsidy (for students who do not otherwise have
coverage), and workers compensation.
Miami University (Oxford, OH): A limited number of graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis.
These carry a work expectation of approximately 15-20 hours per week assisting a faculty member. In 2014-2015,
assistantships were $13,000 plus remission of tuition costs.
Texas State University (San Marcos, TX): There are a limited number of Instructional Assistant (IA) positions for
full-time students (9 hours per semester). IAs typically assist the instructor of record in the large sections of
Philosophy & Critical Reasoning and Ethics & Society. These positions pay enough to cover tuition, fees, and
some living expenses. Given satisfactory performance, IA positions are usually renewed.
Texas Tech University (Lubbock, TX): Teaching Assistantships are provided to almost all students admitted to the
program. The philosophy department typically awards 9 or 10 Teaching Assistantships each year. Stipends are
commensurate with duties. The standard TA stipend is $13,000.
University of Arkansas (Fayetteville, AR): Departmental teaching assistantships are available. For 2019-2020 the
stipend was $12,400, plus tuition waiver. Graduate assistants usually teach Introduction to Philosophy,
Introduction to Ethics, or Logic.
University of Mississippi (Oxford, MS): Each year we award four, two-year Teaching Assistantships to incoming
graduate students.  These feature a 100% tuition waiver and an annual stipend of $10,000.  One of the incoming
TA’s is eligible for a Graduate Honors Fellowship and receives a $12,000 annual stipend.
University of Toledo (Toledo, OH): Almost all full-time students in the program are given a Teaching Assistantship
(funded at competitive levels) and a full tuition fellowship. Moreover, many students are invited to teach their
own courses in their third or fourth semesters.
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Milwaukee, WI): A number of graduate teaching assistantships are available,
offering full tuition remission and salaries of approximately $9,075. Normally, provided they make adequate
progress toward the degree, students who enter with graduate teaching assistantships will have them for the full
two years.
