Gratton No: 1ORN-Univ-Lock: Basic Design and Maintenance Instructions Date: 8-10-98 Halliburton RN® Lock Mandrel Bnei Page 1 of 7 Design Overview ‘The Halliburton RN® Lock Mandrel is a non-selective locking mandrel that is designed to land and lock subsurface flow controls in an RN landing nipple profile. It is a no-go Tock ‘mandrel with the no-go ring installed below the packing. The locating shoulders on the keys are chamnfered to prevent their locating in any other R® landing nipple. This lock mandrel is ‘used with RN-dimensioned service equipment and is installed/retrieved by standard wireline methods. Design Principle “The Halliburton RN Lock Mandrel is run with a Halliburton RXN, RX, or an R Running ‘Tool. The running tool is made up onto a conventional wireline tool string and lowered into the well The keys ofthe lock mandrel ae run fully retracted. When the lock is un on an XN of RX running too, it is lowered directly into the landing nipple. When the lock mandrel is run on an R selective running tool, its lowered through the R landing nipple immediately above the RN landing nipple. Then itis pulled backup through the nipple to place the running tool in the control or locating position. Springs bias the keys outward. The keys have no locating shoulders and therefore will passthrough the K landing nipple without Iocating. The lock mandel is then lowered into the RN landing nipple. “The lock mandrel locates the RN landing nipple by means of a no-go on the equalizing valve, which is made up on the RN lock mandrel. The RN landing nipple has a restricted ID “and prohibits the passage of the larger equalizing valve. Upon locating on the no-go profile, ddownvvard jarring ofthe tool string on the running too! allows the fish neck and the expander Sleeve of the Jock mandrel to move down, Continued downward jarring drives the expander ‘sleeve behind the keys. Once the keys have been locked into the profile, upward jarring shears the lower shear pin in the running tool and releases the running tool from the fock mandrel, ‘The RN lock mandrel has matching non-helical teeth inside the keys and on the OD of the ‘expander sleeve that engage and become the primary hold-down when the lock is subjected to. pressure differential from below. This primary hold-down is designed to inhibit the lock ‘manirel from being flowed or pulled from the landing nipple when a pressure differential exists from below. Some RN lock mandrels have a secondary shear pin hold-down feature. ‘This shear pin locks the expander sleeve and the key retainer together when the Lock is fully sel. This pin must be sheared to pull the lock. After the springs are in place, push the expander sleeve into the key retainer sleeve and ‘move the expander sleeve to its uppermost position, 3, Make up the fish neck onto the expander Sleeve. Place the fish neck in a vise and tighten the connection, Use the holes in the expander sleeve (o tighten the connection Donot wrench on the expander sleove. This could damage the special finish on the upper — end of the expander sleeve. 4, Slide each Key through the bore in the key retainer sleeve and onto a spring. Make ‘certain the spring is properly installed in the key. The spring should pass through a slot inside the key withthe lower end over a shoulder near the bottom of the slot. ‘5. Install the packing mandrel by threading it into the bottom of the Key retainer sleeve. Donot wrench on the polished packing section area ofthe packing mandrel, This could cause premature wear of the packing group. Do not try to force the fish neck downward. This may place the tool in a locked position. 6. Grease and install the packing group and the o-ring onto the packing mandrel. Refer to the Engineering Design Specifications and Drawing forthe proper quantity, sequence, and direction of the packing. ‘7. On lock mandrels that have the shear pin hold-down, install the shear pins, the springs, ‘and the cap screws if the lock mandrel isto be stored. [Remove the packing mandrel from the key retainer. ‘Do not wrench on the polished packing section area ofthe packing mandrel, This could ‘cause premature wear ofthe packing group. Pace the fish neck and the expander sleeve in the unlocked position by pulling them away from the key retainer sleeve. ‘With the fish neck and the expander sleeve in the unlocked position, remove the keys by slipping them from the ends ofthe springs and working them through the bore of the key retainer sleeve, Reposition the lock mandrel in the vise, gripping on the fish neck. Insert a rod through the holes in the expander sleeve. Using the rod as a handle, remove the expander sleeve from the fish neck. ‘Donot wrench on the expander sleeve, This Could damage the special finish on the upper end of the expander sleeve. ‘Do not wrench on the packing mandrel or the key retainer when removing them from the fish neck.
