Wireline Operations - Pulling Tools

Camco - JU Series Pulling Tool

Camco JU series pulling tools are wireline service tools that are used to retrieve

Down Hole Tools

‘jar-down-to-release’ subsurface devices with external fishing necks. JU series
tools consist of a fishing neck with a threaded pin connection on the upper end,
a ‘U’ sub, spring-loaded pulling dogs, a core, a skirt, an emergency release
shear pin and two springs, internal and external.

These tools feature a ‘jar-up-to-release’ safety shear release, which allows the
pulling operation to be aborted without retrieving the subsurface device. This
is achieved by connecting the ‘U’ sub directly to the core instead of the skirt
and shear-pinning the core to the skirt.

During the pulling operation, the external spring allows the dogs to expand
until they latch onto the fishing neck of the subsurface device. If the pulling
operation has to be aborted for any reason, upward jarring will cause the
internal spring to force the core and the ‘U’ sub upward to retract the dogs
completely and so release the pulling tool from the subsurface device.

Camco JU series pulling tools are available with various core lengths to permit
retrieval of subsurface devices having fishing necks that vary in length. Most
JU series pulling tools are internally threaded to receive a prong for equalizing
operations. Under certain conditions, JU pulling tools can also be used as running
tools.

The JU series pulling tool nomenclature indicates the series of the pulling tool,
direction of the safety shear release and the core length. The first letter (J)
indicates the pulling tool series. The second letter (U) indicates that upward
jarring is required to release the tool. The third letter indicates core length:
C for a long core (to accommodate a short fishing neck), S for a medium length
core (to accommodate a medium length fishing neck) and L for a short core (to
accommodate a long fishing neck). Any letter or number following the first
three letters indicates a variation of one or more of the following specifications:
maximum OD, core length, threaded pin connection.

The JU series of pulling tools includes the following models:

• JUC
• JUC-2

Wireline Operations - Pulling Tools

• JUC-U
• JUC-TD
• JUS
• JUS-2
• JUL

All JUC, JUC-2, JUC-U and JUC-TD pulling tools have long cores. The JUC-2 has
larger pin thread connections than the JUC, while the JUC-U has a slightly
smaller maximum OD. The JUC-TD has a smaller maximum OD than a JUC pulling
tool of the same size.

The 2" JUC-2 also features a bell skirt, which increases the maximum OD in
addition to having a larger pin thread connection.

Even though JUC-U and JUC-TD tools have reduced maximum OD's, they still
require the same minimum working ID for pulling dog expansion, as do JUC
pulling tools of the same size.

JUS and JUS-2 pulling tools have medium length cores. However, all JUS-2
pulling tools have larger pin thread connections than do JUS pulling tools of
the same size. Next Item:
