Identify and use alliteration and assonance.
Read each sentence, and write if it is an alliteration or an assonance. Circle the repeating sound.

Alliteration – is the repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning of words.


Sarah Smith sings many silly songs.
Can Carter carry lots of carrots?

Assonance – is the repetition of the same vowel sounds either at the beginning of
words or inside the words.
Anna’s nana asked for bananas and apples.
Everyone excitedly exclaimed for Emily.

1. Ruth ran rapidly to the river. alliteration

2. Willy Willow whittled and whistled.

3. Taylor takes tulips to Teri.

4. He was an obstinate tot named Otto.

5. Phyllis, the famous photographer from Philadelphia.

6. Penny ate a perfect piece of pumpkin pie.

7. Bellowing yellow yaks always bite elbows.

Now you try. Write some silly sentences with at least two alliterations and two assonances. Then
state the type of repetition and repeated sound.

Example : I fly so high like a diamond in the sky. (assonance – ‘ai’ sound)
