The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is a course that has been designed for professionals

who are already teaching but want to acquire an internationally recognised qualification
certification that recognises their expertise. Awarded by Cambridge English Language
Assessment, TKT can increase a teacher’s confidence and enhance job prospects
worldwide.

Studying for a TKT qualification will broaden your understanding of:

 methodologies of teaching
 the language of teaching
 ways in which resources and teaching aids can be used
 key aspects of lesson planning
 classroom management methods techniques

The course is suitable for those who would like to take the TKT examinations, but can also
be used as a standalone teacher training course.

Why take TKT?

TKT can be taken by inexperienced teachers or those with experience but without a formal
English teaching qualification. TKT gives teachers a strong foundation in the core areas of
subject knowledge required to be a successful practitioner in the English language
classroom. TKT is the ideal qualification for existing teachers who would like to broaden their
subject knowledge to include English in the portfolio of subjects they are trained to teach.

On this course you will develop your knowledge of teaching English language skills and
systems, and be provided with professionally developed materials which cater to your needs.
You will become more familiar with up-to-date methods and approaches to teaching, and
through these interactive sessions, will have the opportunity to share your knowledge and
skills with other professionals in your field.

The course will cover the areas included in the Cambridge TKT exams Modules 1-3. All
participants who complete this training will be given a certificate of attendance.

Who can take these exams?

TKT is suitable for teachers of English in primary, secondary or adult teaching contexts and
is intended for an international audience of non-first language or first language teachers of
English.

Candidates taking TKT will normally have some experience of teaching English to speakers
of other languages. TKT may also be taken by:

 pre-service teachers.
 teachers who wish to refresh their teaching knowledge.
 teachers who are moving to teaching English after.
 teaching another subject.

TKT candidates are expected to be familiar with language relating to the practice of ELT
Recognition:

Cambridge English Teaching Qualifications are recognised by organisations which employ


English language teachers as providing quality teacher training and development.
Cambridge English works with international ELT organisations to ensure the acceptance of
TKT globally.

Program Design:
TKT has three core modules and three optional modules.

The core modules include:

 language and background to language learning and teaching


 lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching
 managing the teaching and learning process

The optional or specialist modules include:

 Knowledge About Language - A test of knowledge and understanding of the systems


of language from a teaching perspective.
 Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) - A test of the understanding of
this exciting approach to teaching curriculum subjects through the medium of a
second or third language.
 Young Learners - A test of the background knowledge related to teaching young
learners in the 6–12 age range.

TKT preparation resources:

Cambridge English offers a comprehensive range of printed and online exam preparation
and support products and services for teachers and learners for all Cambridge English

Your results:

Each module has individual scoring and is free- standing. Each question carries 1 mark with
a total of 80 questions in each module. There is no Pass/Fail. You will receive a certificate
for each module taken. TKT results are issued through centres approximately two weeks
after receipt of answer sheets by Cambridge English.

The results are reported in four bands,

Band A candidate at this level demonstrates


1 limited knowledge of TKT content areas
2 basic but systematic knowledge of TKT content areas
3 breadth and depth of knowledge of TKT content areas
4 extensive knowledge of TKT content areas
