IV. Procedure
A. Motivation
Before we take our lesson I have a
question first.
Is it possible for you to write down --- yes
how many atoms are there in human
body?
Yes it is possible right? But it takes
time or it is time consuming because
those are very large or many
numbers to write.

b. Abstraction

Today’s lesson is about scientific - Scientific Notation is a way of

notation. expressing numbers that are too big
Everybody read the definition of it. or too small to be conveniently
written in a decimal form.

Very good, thank you

To make it short, scientific notation is like

an abbreviation, because in science we
spend a lot of time dealing with huge
numbers just like what I have said earlier on
how many atoms are there in human body.

Here’s what we do to compress that huge

numbers down and write it in a Scientific
Notation.

But before that let me explain to you first

the rules in scientific notation.

Scientific notation has a 3 part the

coefficient, base and exponent.

Coefficient—2.55x106
The coefficient must be greater than or
equal to 1 and less than 10, the
multiplication sign is part of it and it is
constant same with base and you can get
the exponent by counting on how many
times you move the decimal point.
LISTEN ATTENTIVELY
Large numbers will have positive exponent.
Small numbers will have negative exponent.

Examples of converting a regular number

into scientific notation.

18,500,000

We needed to convert this number into

scientific notation. And right now since you
don’t see any decimal point, you can
assume that it’s on the right. We need to
move this decimal point to the non-zero
digit that is farthest to the left and the non-
zero digit that is farthest to the left is this
number 1. And remember that the
coefficient must be greater than or equal to
1 but less than 10. If we move the decimal

point in front of that number, we have to

move it 7 times and now we can place the
decimal point in front of this digit. Let’s take
a look at all of our non-zero digit number
and we have 1.85 x 10 and we move the
decimal point 7 times so the exponent is
positive because we have a large number.
Large has a positive exponent.

Example
25,300,000,000,000

This is a large number right? ---yes

Understood that the exponent is? ---positive
We count on how many times we move the
decimal point, 13 the exponent is positive
13 and the answer is
2.5 x 1013

Example
0.000000375
Is this a large or small number?
--small
A small number has a negative exponent
--yes
right?
How do we convert it into a scientific
notation? Just like the other example that I
gave, we move the decimal point to the
non-zero digit. But in small numbers we
move it from left to right not like in large
numbers we move it from right to left.

Exponent goes up←.

If we move the decimal point from right to
left the exponent goes up or positive.

. → exponent goes down

If we move the decimal point from left to
right the exponent goes down or it is
negative.

3.75 x 10-7
Because it is a small number and the
decimal point moved from left to right.

Example
0.000000000000000000503

= 5.03 x 10-19

C. Application

Convert these numbers into scientific

notation
1. 5,880,000,000,000
2. 0.000000005
3. 11100000000000000000000 1. 5.88 x 1012
4. 0.00000000000000000000999 2. 5 x 10-8
3. 1.11 x 1023
5. 0.0000000214
4. 9.99 x10-21
5. 2.14 x10-8
D .generalization
Any question? And clarification? --none
Did you learn the lesson? --yes
How many parts are there in
---3
scientific notation?
--coefficient, base and exponent
What are they?
If we have a large number, the ---positive
exponent should be?
How about if we have small number ---negative
the exponent should be?
