Lesson Writing Numbers in Scientific Notation and

1 Vice-Versa

What is it?
Scientific notation is part of the language of math and science. It is a special way of
writing numbers so they are easier to work with. By using exponents, numbers are reformat. This
can be helpful, in much the same way that it's helpful (that is, it's easier) to write "twelve trillion"
rather than 12,000,000,000,000., or "thirty nanometers" rather than "0.00000003 meters".
For very large or very small numbers, it is sometimes simpler to use "scientific notation"
(so called, because scientists often deal with very large and very small numbers).

A number expressed in scientific notation is written in the form :

a x 10n

where: a is the coefficient and n is an integer.

For a number to be in correct scientific notation, the following conditions must be true:

1. The coefficient must be greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10. (1 ≤ a<10)
2. The base of the exponent must be 10.
3. The exponent must show the number of decimal places that a decimal needs to be moved
to change the number to standard notation.

Changing Numbers from Standard Notation to Scientific Notation

1. Move the decimal point to the position such that there is one nonzero digit to the left of the
decimal point.
2. If the decimal point is moved to the left, the exponent is positive.
3. If the decimal point is moved to the right, the exponent is negative.

Examples:
1. Express 213,000,000 in scientific notation.

The decimal point is moved eight spaces to the left, thus the exponent is 8. The decimal point was
moved until one and only one nonzero digit was in front of the decimal point. Therefore,
8
213 000 000=2.13 x 10
2. Express 0.00872 in scientific notation.

1
The decimal point was moved to the left three spaces; thus, the exponent is -3. Therefore,
0.00872=8.72 x 10−3
50
3. Express in scientific notation.
10 000000

50
=0.000 005 0.000 005=5 x 10
−6
10 000000

Changing Numbers in Scientific Notation to Decimal Form

Move the decimal point the same number of places as the exponent. If the exponent
is  positive, move the decimal point to the right. If the exponent is negative, move the decimal
point to the left.

5.88 x 1012 ¿ 5.880000000000=5,880,000,000,000

5 x 10-8¿ 0.00000005=0.00000005

NOTE: If the given expression is not in its standard form, observe the same rules. If the
exponent is positive, move the decimal point to the right. If the exponent is negative, move the
decimal point to the left.

Examples:
243.2 x103¿ 243.200 .=243 200

0.003 x 10-7¿ 0.0000000 .003=0.0000000003

Lesson Representing Real Life Situations with Real

2 Numbers

What is it

2
The concept of opposites is commonly demonstrated in real life. In terms of direction, going
south is the opposite of going north; in terms of length, short is the opposite of long; in terms of altitude,
low is the opposite of high; in terms of quantity, few is the opposite of many. In mathematics, opposites
are denoted by the signs + (positive) and – (negative). When a number is written without any sign, it is
understood to be positive. Study the number line below.

The number 3 to the right of 0 is +3; to the left of 0 is -3. +3 and -3 are opposites. Likewise, -7 and +7
are opposites. The following real life situations representing opposites.

Examples:
Study the following real life situations.
1. An increase of Php5 is denoted by +5, while decrease of Php5 is denoted by -5.

2. A profit of Php100 is denoted by 100, while a loss of Php100 id denoted by -100.

3. A direction of 2 blocks east is denoted by +2 while 2 blocks west is denoted by -2.

4. A rise of 8 degrees in temperature is denoted by 8, while a drop of 8 degrees is denoted by -8.

What’s More

Complete the table below. Represent each real life situation by a signed number in the second column.
Write the opposite of each situation in the third column and represent by a sign in the last column.

Situation Representation Opposite of the Situation Representation

1. 400 feet below sea
level
2. 2 steps forward
3. Going up the stairs by
8 steps
4. Marching 12 steps to

5. A profit of Php450
6. Walking 5 blocks

Lesson Solving Problems Involving Real
3
Numbers

What is it
George Polya’s four-step process for problem solving
1. Step 1: Understand the problem.
2. Step 2: Devise a plan (translate).
3. Step 3: Carry out the plan (solve).
4. Step 4: Look back (check and interpret).

EXAMPLES:

1. In a game, Team Azcals lost 5 yards in one play but gained 7 yards in the next play. What
was the actual yardage gain of the team?
Solution:
Given: Lost 5 yards implies –5 Gained 7 yards implies +7
Required: the actual yardage gain
Adding the two scores: - 5 + 7 = 2
Therefore, the actual yardage of the team is 2 yards.

2. You had ₱56,500 in your savings account. You withdrew ₱7,000 on Monday and deposited
₱12,500 on Friday. What was your bank balance?
Solution:
Given: Amount in the savings account = ₱56,500
Amount withdrawn = ₱7,000
Amount deposited = 12,500
Required: Bank balance
56,500+ (−7,000 ) +12,500=62,000

Therefore, the bank balance is ₱62,000

3. ¾ of the entire students of our school can join the activity. If there are 500 students, how
many can join the activity?
SOLUTION:
3
Given: of the entire students can join the activity
4
500 = total number of students
Required: number of students that can join the activity
3
x 500=375
4
Therefore, 375 students can join the activity

4. Derick bought a stick which is 48 1/3 inches long. For a school project, he needs to cut the
stick into pieces, 5/3 inches long. How many 5/3 inches long pieces can he obtain from the
stick?
Solution:
1 5
Given: length of the stick = 48 inches length of a piece of stick: inches
3 3
5
Required: number of in long pieces
3

4
1 5 145 3 145
48 ÷ = x = =29
3 3 3 5 5

5
Therefore: There are 29 pieces of inches sticks.

the third day. How much profit did Lucy gain in 3 days?

2. You want to buy a refrigerator whose cash price is Php 8 463. If you buy it on credit card,
you need to pay Php 1 542 for 6 months. How much more is the price of the refrigerator
