Significant Figures

Scientific Notation
1. 1 digit to left of decimal pt, it must be NON ZERO
2. Add “x 10”
3. Keep ALL significant figures
4. The number of spots you moved the decimal point
becomes the exponent for “x 10”
5. If original # is <1, the exponent is negative
If original # is >1, the exponent is positive
Standard Notation: Scientific Notation:
Significant Figures:
significant means :”measured”
1. All NON ZEROs are significant.
2. Look to the digit on the far right of the decimal pt:
a. If it is a zero, it is significant
b. If there is no decimal point, go to step #3
c. If there are NO digits to the right of decimal pt,
EVERY digit in the number is significant.
3. Zeros in between sig figs ARE significant.
