Sonic Marshmallow Cannon

About this project:

The Sonic Marshmallow Cannon is a Super Sonic Expert Level Project, appealing to kids
of all ages but requiring more skill and time to build than other SonicDad projects. This
cannon is designed for shooting a mini-marshmallow projectile, and is powered by
common 91% rubbing alcohol. When a lightly saturated fuel sponge is inserted into the
cannon’s combustion chamber, alcohol vapor mixes with oxygen to create a flammable
mixture. When the igniter button on the cannon is pressed, the combustible gas ignites,
producing a loud sonic boom and launching a mini marshmallow!

What’s it made of?

The Sonic Marshmallow Cannon is made from PVC pipe and fittings for the base,
combustion chamber, and barrel. The barrel heat sink is made from a drain pipe fitting.
The oxygen pump is made from a small sporting goods ball pump. A small screw is used
to prevent the marshmallow projectile from falling back into the combustion chamber.

It’s a good idea to work on a surface such as a
piece of poster board – gluing PVC pipe together
can be messy. (fig. 1)

through the other side; that
would be a bummer!

bushing, and nipple. Be sure the hole extends
into the center of the nipple, allowing air to
enter the combustion chamber from the pump.

Firing Your Marshmallow Cannon

The fist step is to wet the fuel sponge with
91% rubbing alcohol. I like to put the alcohol
in a small spray bottle. Wet all four sides of
the sponge all along the length. You’ll want to
saturate the sponge to the point just before
the fuel will drip out . . . Perfecto!

Now install the fuel

sponge in the rear of
the cannon and tighten
the cap snuggly like
this.

For the first shot when the cannon

is cold, you’ll need to remove the
igniter and prime the combustion
chamber with one quick spray of
fuel. Then twist the igniter back in
and tighten snuggly.

Now twist off the barrel and load a

marshmallow projectile in the end like
this. For the best projectile and
velocity, the marshmallow should be a
snug fit in the barrel. Here’s a tip: If
the marshmallow is a bit lose in the
barrel, take it out and lightly squeeze
the ends of the marshmallow. This will
make the diameter of the marshmallow
a bit larger . . . cool!

After you have fired your cannon, get ready for the
next bang by pumping the air pump 6 or 8 times. This
will push out the exhaust gasses and bring new air
into the combustion chamber. Just repeat the loading
and firing steps to shoot your cannon again . . . Cool!
Be careful and have a blast!!! You should have enough
fuel in the sponge to shoot up to 30 shoots before
needing to wet the sponge with fuel again.

When you are finished booming, remove the fuel sponge

and wrap it in a small plastic bag like a sandwich bag. Put
a twist tie or rubber band around the pen tube to keep
air out. The bag will help keep the sponge from drying
out until you shoot again. Once covered with a small bag,
you can store the fuel sponge in a safe place or even
back inside the cannon.

Notice to Airmen and

Warnings!: Check local laws
and ordinances before
operating your cannon. Find
a suitable location for
operating your cannon away
from people, animals, or
anything affected by loud
noise. Always keep
observers behind
the cannon. Never fire
your cannon at people or
animals. NEVER put
anything but one mini
marshmallow in the barrel
of your cannon! Never look
into the barrel. Wear
hearing and eye protection
when needed, especially for
small children. But most of
all, be safe and have fun!
