Persuasive Speech: Outline

Your New Skin Routine

Introduction
I. Hook:  Who growing up was consistently told to wear sunscreen but opted for a glowy tan
instead?

II. Ethos: I have always had an interest in health but more specifically skin health. I currently a
CNA and phlebotomist at a medical aesthetics clinic and have done my research about this
topic.

III. Proposition (or Hint at Proposition): even though I love a good tan, I now agree that
protecting your skin through anti-aging and a proper skin routine.

IV. Preview: [List here the two or three main points you will cover in your speech. State your
preview out loud in your introduction.]
1. What skin anti-aging and skin damage?
2. What are the signs and symptoms of skin damage?
3. What we can do to prevent or help slow anti-aging or skin damage?

Transition: Let us start with my first main point.

Body

I. What is skin damage?

A. Dermalogica describes skin damage as quote "Your skin endures a lot. Every day, natural
(intrinsic) and environmental (extrinsic) triggers change its structure from inside and out. Over
time these factors lead to the accumulation of molecular damage in the skin, ultimately resulting
in premature signs of aging like hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles."

Transition: Lets dive deeper...

II. What are the signs and symptoms of skin damage?

A. Sunspots
                                                  i. Sunspots or also known as age spots are liver spots are flat
brown spots that develop on the areas of the skin that are most exposed to the sun. Healthline
explains the physiology of sunspots as, quote; "UV radiation causes pigmented skin cells called
melanocytes to multiply." These are non-cancerous and cause no harm but the more sun
exposure the more at risk we are for skin cancer.

B. Dry or itchy skin
                                                  i. As we get older we could experience more dry or itchy skin.
ii. BCAP describes why, quote; "As skin ages, increased
transepidermal water loss leads to dry skin and reduced barrier function. Dry skin is
often itchy and prone to dermatitis."

C. Wrinkles or sagging
i. Our skin is built with collagen fibers. As we reach our 30s our collagen production becomes
slower. Collagen is what gives our skin its shape, strength, and elasticity. Because of the slower
production of collagen, our skin begins to lose its shape, which results in wrinkles and sagging of
the skin.

Now...

III. What we can do to prevent or help slow anti-aging or skin damage? and why we want to
implement these prevention measures now.
A. As I explained the main cause of skin damage is the sun and one of the first signs of sun
damage is sunspots.
                                                  i. We can prevent sunspots by listening to what our parents
always told us. "Wear your sunscreen!"
ii. The mayo clinic provides prevention tips on how we can
protect ourselves by the sun. Quote; "Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Because the
sun's rays are most intense during this time. Use sunscreen. Fifteen to 30 minutes before going
outdoors, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an (SPF) of at least 30. Apply sunscreen
generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you're swimming or
perspiring. Cover up. For protection from the sun, wear clothing that covers your arms and legs
and a broad-brimmed hat, which provides more protection."

B. We can support dry and itchy skin by starting early on prevention methods.
                                                  i. Finding a good medical grad moisturizer and using it morning
and night will keep the skin to maintain its balance. This is important because when the skin is
overly dry. Our skin is more prone to acne and irritation.
ii. Also keeping hydrated is an important factor in helping dry skin. Forefront dermatology
explains this by quote; "Without adequate water intake, skin appears duller, and wrinkles and
pores more prominent. Proper hydration levels help the skin to become plump and improves its
elasticity meaning it's less likely to crack and have irritations and blemishes.”

C. Wrinkles, as we explained, are a natural result of a lack of collagen production as we age.

i. Prevention is explained by Medical News Today, quote; "Topical retinoids derived
from vitamin A. They aim to reduce fine wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and skin roughness. They
do this by increasing collagen production in the skin."

ii. For already noticeable deep creases, treatment does with fillers, botox, and radiofrequency
facials can help reduce these lines.

Transition to close: Finally...

Conclusion:
1. Summarize main points/thesis: Now that we have gone through the problem, cause, and
solution for skin damage. We can conclude that it important for us to protect our skin. By
following a regular skin routine (cleanse, moisturize, sunscreen, and adequate hydration).
Along with diet and exercise, we can prevent premature aging and the risk of various skin
cancers.
2. Bookend: After learning more about my skin, I have a religious skin routine. Never
leave the house without sunscreen.
3. End the speech memorably: and know why more than I should about self-tanners.
4. Challenge the audience to respond: I hope that after listening to the information in this
speech that you will take action in protecting your skin.
