“The Loggerhead Turtles”

Dear friends Good Morning. My name is Dipshikha Indrani and today I am going to talk about a marine
reptile called the Loggerhead turtles.

As unique as this species of turtle is, the bigger role it plays in the ecosystem. Before jumping to the
importance of them in the ecosystem first let's know what they are. Loggerhead turtles are named for
their large heads that support powerful jaw muscles, allowing them to crush hard-shelled prey like clams
and sea urchins. Their large, strong and paddle-like flippers possess allow them to swim easily through
the ocean.

Their contribution towards the marine and land ecosystem is beyond description. As Loggerhead turtles
grow, their shells become large that can carry colonies of small plants and animals on their shells which
serve as important habitat themselves. As many as 100 species of animals and plants have been
recorded living on one single loggerhead turtle.

When the baby turtle hatches out of their eggs, they head towards the sea but their eggshells remain at
the beach. This shells in turn helps plants to obtain necessary nutrients.

But these turtles are decreasing in number. In the beginning of my speech I mentioned that loggerhead
turtle eats clams and urchins. But unfortunately, the truth is they eat plastic. In the beach areas many
people throw their waste plastic products on the sea. The ocean carries this plastic to many places. The
baby sea turtles after hatching out of their egg is unaware of what to eat. So, by mistake they end up
consuming plastic products which at the end of the day kills them. On the other hand, when they grow
up, due to their large size they get trapped inside fishing nets. We humans have been polluting the
environment for years which now has resulted in a massive climate change. Due to this climate change
the ocean’s current keeps on alternating which creates a life-threatening problem for the loggerheads
and the other marine creatures.

But now it's high time where we can actually make a change. Instead of throwing plastic waste in the
ocean we can throw them in bins and we can also make sure fishing nets are not used in areas where
this turtle live and last but not the least, we can spread awareness and educate others about this
alarming issue.

Thank you.
