“Beautiful Exotic Creature With Crawls”

Before I start my speech, I wanna ask all of you something, have you ever heard that there’s an
animal that can return to the place where it was spawned even after swimming thousands of
kilometers? This animal is also known as a brave animal, because since it was still in the egg, it
has been independent and left by its mother under the sand on the beach. Anyone knows? Before
I start my speech, let me introduce myself.

Assalamu’alaikum wr.wb.
Good Morning, Ladies and Gentlemen.
Good Morning, Your excellencies the committees
and The Honorable Judges.
Dear my friends who participate in this speech contest.

I’m Adinda Keytha, from Muhammadiyah 1 Junior High School. And on this beautiful day, I’d
like to deliver my speech about, “Beatiful Exotic Creature With Crawls”, and the animal is turtle.
Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Of the many animals that are almost extinct, why did I choose turtle?
Turtles are very beautiful animals, but unfortunately there are many irresponsible individuals,
either intentionally or unintentionally, destroying the turtle ecosystem. And not least, the
population of turtles that live under the sea is decreasing day by day, due to the actions of
irresponsible individuals.

There are 4 points that I will convey.

#First Point ; About The Extinction Of Sea Turtles.

Turtles are one of the reptile animals that are no less beautiful than other reptile animals, there
are many unique things that turtles have. However, who would have thought? It turns out that
turtles are included in the red list, and are facing a serious threat of extinction, this was
announced by the International Conservation Institute IUCN. In fact, a professor emeritus from
the University of Georgia, Whit Gibbons, revealed that the population of turtle species has
continued to decline for more than 200 million years due to various reasons, such as the use of
turtles as pets, food, destruction of turtle habitats, and even climate change.
If this continues to happen, it is not impossible that in the next few years the turtle species will
become completely extinct.

#Second Point ; About Species and Habitat.

Ladies and Gentlemen, did you know that, in this world there are 7 types of turtles, but in
Indonesia there are only 6 types of turtles. According to the West Kalimantan BKSDA, the
longest turtle landing in West Kalimantan is in Paloh, Sambas. There are 3 types of turtles that
are found to frequently land in West Kalimantan, namely the Leatherback, Green and Hawksbill
turtles. The turtle's habitat is in salt water or the sea, but occasionally it still has to rise to the
surface of the sea to take a breath, because it breathes using its lungs. Apart from breathing,
turtles will also go to land, especially the beach, to lay their eggs.

#Third Point ; About Turtle Populations.

Information about the status of turtle populations nationally is still not available, monitoring of
turtle populations has only been carried out in several nesting areas that have been designated as
conservation areas. For example, the leatherback turtle population in Jamursba Medi-Papua, the
green turtle population in Berau-East Kalimantan, etc. However, there is also a population of
green turtles in West Kalimantan, specifically on Paloh Beach, West Kalimantan. Population
monitoring on nesting beaches which are conservation areas is carried out by the Ministry of
Forestry and Environment together with WWF Indonesia. In general, the status of turtle
populations tends to decline.
#Fourth Point ; About The Special Features Of Turtles.

Turtles also have many features, for example ;

1) Turtles can migrate as far as 5,900 kilometers in one trip. This is because turtles have an
ability called magnetoreception. Magnetoreception functions to provide direction and
also as an indication of which land is the destination.

2) Female turtles can lay hundreds of eggs but only 1-3% can survive until adulthood.
Reporting from the National Action Plan (RAN). That, of the hundreds of eggs laid by a
female turtle, at most 1-3% make it to adulthood. This is because many turtles die in the
sea. The turtle's habitat, which coincides with the living area of the fish that are the target
of fishing, also causes many turtles to die because they were caught accidentally.

3) Turtles are brave animals. I’ve mentioned at the beginning that turtles are brave
animals, because since they haven't hatched they have been left by their mothers under
the sand on the beach. After hatching, he also doesn't feel afraid of wading into the strong
sea water which is actually quite dangerous for him. However, the turtle was not afraid,
he continued to swim along with the sea current.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have discussed 4 points related to turtles, starting from extinction, types, habitat, population,
and even some of the special features of turtles. At this point, have you thought about protecting
and preserving turtles, at least in West Kalimantan? If not, then, let's work together to protect the
habitat of turtles and other marine animals by not throwing rubbish, especially plastic rubbish,
into the sea, because the sea is heaven on earth! Prove that we, young people, can also take part
in preserving turtles!
I am Adinda Keytha, saying goodbye. Thank you everyone, thank you for all of the judges.
Wassalamu’alaikum wr.wb.
