Civics Reflection

One issue that President Bush had to deal with, which stuck out to me, was at the start
of the interview, which was about the ceremony when he became president. He had to
deal with situations, such as people swearing at him, sticking up their middle fingers,
rude signs, and even eggs being thrown. President Bush seemed to be completely
calm, and even when describing it, showed no rage. This was really admirable, because
it reflects President Truman’s statement about how no one can really understand what
it’s like to be president. Despite this, and having to deal with people like this, he took it
in, kept it to himself, and continued on. Something that concerned me about the
president was that he mentioned a drinking problem. This is automatically a concerning
piece of information, however it also surprised me. On top of this, it was surprising how
he quit this problem, and continued on to become president instead. This is another
admirable aspect of President Bush. Another situation related to him was when he was
drunk at the dinner table. The way he owns up to his mistakes openly in this interview
are also an amazing aspect. I approve of the way that President Bush was able to
change from that, and fulfill his roles as president. Not just these events, however, there
are many more situations the president had been put in. For example, another event, or
in fact, series of events, were the ones during the Iraq war. Many of his decisions and
acts during this time are known as “controversial”. However, the fact that President
Bush dealt with these, as well as he didn’t let anyone or anything get inside his head is
amazing. He made his own decisions, and didn’t let anyone influence him. This actually
turns out to be a positive attribute about him that many people like in a president.
Overall, the situations President Bush dealt with were incredible, and very surprising.
The ways he dealt with them really impressed me. President Bush seems to be a very
calm person and was able to deal with many problems, as he displays himself as a
patient person. After this interview, I have definitely gained respect for him, especially
after not being aware of the ways he dealt with things, and how he got work done. Also,
historians will definitely remember him as a positive light, and a very inspiring president
indeed, as he once enjoyed drinking a lot, and changed a lot, ultimately making him a
great president.
