IST 541 Final Project – Instructional Website Design Document

Title or Topic of Module/Lesson: Integrating LOOM and EdPuzzle with Google Classroom to
create a “flipped classroom” model.

Date this Design Created/Modified: 07/11/2018

Designer’s Name: Joan Miller

General Overview/Need: There is an ever-increasing host of free, user-friendly, web-based

tools available to educators that help them to create educational content that can be utilized
outside of the classroom. The educational content created with these tools can be used either
before a lesson is explored in class, in a “flipped classroom” model, or can be used for self-
paced review at home, fostering deeper understanding and engagement with the subject matter.
It has become popular in recent years for K-12 educators to use the free web service Google
Classroom to organize and distribute assignments, and to communicate with students. For this
assignment I will build a website that features two free web-based tools that integrate
seamlessly with Google Classroom. Loom is a new tool for quickly and easily creating and
sharing screencasts. EdPuzzle was created in 2013 and is a popular tool for turning existing
videos into lessons with interactive quizzes and built-in analytics. Both tools can be used with
Mac, Windows and Chromebook computers.

Target Audience: This website is being designed to align with my MIST cohort’s final project in
IST 626. For that project our primary audience is a high school teacher, Ms. Wessels, who is
interested in redesigning her AP Government course. In a more general sense, she is
interested in exploring some new strategies for reading engagement (see Leticia Molina’s
IST541 final website proposal) and adding a “flipped classroom” element to her course design,
so that she may focus in-class time on critical thinking tasks. Ms. Wessels already uses Google
Classroom to organize assignments and communicate with her students.

A secondary audience is Ms. Wessel’s students, who all use Chromebooks in the classroom.
Loom was built specifically for Chrome, so in the future Ms. Wessels may choose to have her
students create their own screencast videos as part of an assignment.

Finally, the information contained within the website could be used by any teacher who is
interested in trying out free multimedia resources to deliver out-of-classroom content to their
students.

Technical: Access to an internet browser and basic knowledge of how to navigate a website
(e.g. back, forward, exit, etc.). Sound is required for reviewing video content. Specific user
credentials are not required to interact with the website.

Conditions of Instruction: Learners access content via personal laptop and desktop
computers or tablet-style devices. There will be interactive components for the learner to
manipulate within the website’s pages.

Website Design:
 A landing page with background information as to the purpose of the website. jQuery will
be used to create menus within the website.
 An interactive image map with hot spot activity to explore where video/audio lectures,
interactive quizzes and online chats fit into the overall full picture of the Flipped
Classroom.
 A page with text and graphic depictions of how the Chrome extension “Loom” functions
for making screencasts. (Bootstrap components will be utilized)
 A page with text and graphic depictions of how to make a quiz with existing video in
EdPuzzle, and how to access pre-made video content. (Bootstrap components will be
utilized)
 A “Google Classroom: Loom Integration” page with embedded video content. (Using
iFrames)
 A “Google Classroom: EdPuzzle Integration” page with embedded video content. (Using
iFrames)
 A resource page for anyone that wants to learn more about free tools for flipped
classroom design, including articles and reviews of Loom and EdPuzzle. (Bootstrap
accordion widget)
 A short quiz

Learning Objectives:
 Learner will download the Loom extension and demonstrate the ability to create, edit and
share a screencast of her chosen content.
 Learner will sign up for an EdPuzzle account and demonstrate the ability to insert
comments and quiz questions within existing video content.
 Learner will integrate Loom screencast and EdPuzzle lessons with her class contacts
and assignments in her Google Classroom account.
 Learner and designer will practice using the comments window next to her Loom video
to evaluate the effectiveness of this function to foster group communication and social
interaction around chosen content.

Assessment options (not in rubric): Post assessments about website functionality using
Google Forms will gather feedback from learners on content knowledge and may include
multiple choice, short/long text responses and reaction surveys.

Instructional/Cognitive/Multimedia Strategies: This instructional website will be designed to

manage limited cognitive resources during learning by employing specific design strategies like
“chunking” information into organized tabs, and accordion style layers to streamline content
navigation. The designer will also use best practices in e-Learning design by adhering to the
PARC, multimedia, contiguity, segmenting and coherence principals.
