Metric Hex Head Caps Screws are typically manufactured to the dimensional requirements of one of the
following standards organizations.
ANSI/ASME B18.2.3.1M
DIN 931 (and DIN 933 - threaded to head product)
ISO 4014 (and ISO 4017 – threaded to the head product)
These three main standards organizations have slight differences in the tolerances that they specify for
Hex Head Cap Screws.
The main difference between these three standards organizations is the Width Across the Flats dimension
for the M10. M12 and M14 sizes. Each standard specified a different width the across the flats dimension
for these three sizes.
Note that product made to any of these standards are interchangeable with each other. A cap screws
manufactured to the dimensions specified by any one of these standards organization are usable on nuts
manufactured to the tolerances of all of these organizations.
The most common standard specified for strength levels for cap screws is ISO 898-1. Two other
standards organizations that can also be specified for strength are SAE J1199 or ASTM F568M. The
strength levels and marking requirements specified in the latest revision of all three of these standards
organization are equivalent.
