 Types of News
News is the information about current events, but it’s not always about the current
stories or events. It contains huge types of variety that interests large number of
people and can’t be specified into any sort of limitations. Basically, it’s an abstract
concept whose shape changes as the interest of human change

 Overall Flexibility
 Proximity
 Issue Based News
 Standard of Information
 Depth of Information

There are many types of news. It’s arranged in various aspects, can be represented
through many angles! So academically it’s classified from various points of views.

So, there are some major types of news which are elaborated below:

Overall Flexibility
There are two kinds of Overall flexibility. They are
 Hard News
 Soft News.

Hard news is a major thrust on newspaper. It generally covers news on

serious crimes and terror attacks. It also covers about disasters and foreign
affairs. In a sentence, it’s very impactful and related to the circumstances of
a recent event or incident considered to be of general local, regional,
national, or international significance. The hard news stories are supposed to
be strictly objective- the journalist need not give his or her opinion on the
 story, but should provide facts as they are. Hard news leads put all the
important information into the first paragraph, known as the lead. This
usually includes who, what, where, when and why of the story. Three
examples of hard news are given below:

 George Floyd: A Killing That Shook

the World
Thousands of people have joined marches against racism after the killing of George Floyd in
Minneapolis. Clive Myrie asks if this event could change race relations in America for good.(BBC)

 ‘Mobile service tax 15% in India, 17% in Pakistan, 33% in

country
Taxes are now higher in Bangladesh as well as some neighboring
countries. In Afghanistan, the tax on mobile service subscribers is
12%. 15 in India, 17 in Pakistan and 23 in Sri Lanka. In Bangladesh,
the new budget has increased the supplementary duty by 33
percent.

 Pakistan says it shot down Indian jets, carried out air strikes in
Kashmir
Pakistan carried out air strikes and shot down two Indian jets on Wednesday, Pakistani officials said, a day after Indian
warplanes struck inside Pakistan for the first time since a war in 1971, prompting leading powers to urge both sides to

Soft News is always less important than hard news. It does not deal with
serious topics or events. It refers to the stories that provide other background
information about world events, human interest stories or entertainment
news. It can be subjective, don’t need to be put all the details.
Examples are:

Would you recommend downloading TikTok? Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was asked that
question on Monday night on Fox News.(BBC)
  Shahid Afridi wins auction to buy Mushfiqur’s bat to aid the
poor amid coronavirus crisis
Shahid Afridi is now the owner of Mushfiqur Rahim’s historic bat which he wielded
for Bangladesh’s first Test double century.

 Proximity
If we try to look for the meaning then we can see it is the quality or state of
being next in time, place, causation, influence, immediate nearness, either in
place, blood or alliance. In journalism, Stories about events and situations in
one's home community are more newsworthy than events that take place far
away. For example, journalists assess the value of a news item reporting tragic
deaths by comparing the number of deaths with the distance from the home
community.
There are four kinds of Proximity. They are:
  Local News
 Regional News
 National News
 International News

Local News refers to news coverage of events about a specific local area
which wouldn’t normally be of interest to other localities. It wouldn’t be
national or internationally covered. It is generally about a specific small
area, about its people, their lifestyle etc. Here we go for some examples:

 Bangladesh ferry crash: At least 32 dead as boat

capsizes

At least 32 people have died and many more are missing after a ferry capsized in Bangladesh,

 Bangladesh plans to recruit another 2,000
physicians through special BCS exam
The health ministry has proposed to hold a special BCS examination on an emergency basis
for the recruitment of another 2,000 physicians to tackle the corona virus crisis.

 Regional News refers to events which relate to a particular area of a

country or of the world. It covers the daily incidents about a state that
would only be of interest of people of that state and no other state or
region. Here are some examples



A group of Bangladesh fans were fined for celebrating the birthday of football star

 Northern Bangladesh braces for floods as rivers swell amid

heavy rain

 National News means relating to the whole of a country or nation rather than
to part of it or to other nations. It’s about the national characteristics and
history of the country.Let’s go for the examples:

 Bangladesh decides to import rice as prices

surge in pandemic
The government has decided to buy rice from abroad while reducing the import duty, as local millers refused to

International News or world news or even foreign coverage is the news

media jargon for news from abroad, about a country or a global subject. For
journalism, it is a branch that deals with news either sent by foreign
correspondents or news agencies, or – more recently – information that is
gathered or researched through distance communication technologies, such as
telephone, satellite TV or the internet. Let’s see the examples:

 India corona virus: Life-saving Covid-19

drugs sold on Delhi black market
A BBC investigation has found that two life-saving drugs used to treat Covid-19 patients in
India - remdesivir and tocilizumab - are in short supply and being sold for excessive rates
