2. PIPING SUPPORT DESIGN

Pipe support design shall consider parameters like the support location, the support function and the
characteristics of the pipe to be supported.
Special mention should be done to elements of special nature like transition elements, support members
and elastic supports.
TR will design the supports for all pipes 2” nominal diameter and larger, as well as supports for smaller
sizes, when the safety of the pipe might be affected due to flexibility problems. The rest of the required
supports shall be defined and located in the field by others, under TR field supervision.
Supports for lines running on pipe racks shall be designed by TR regardless the pipe size. When possible,
pipes 2” nominal diameter and smaller will be supported from larger and adjacent pipes.
Although the supports for pipes 2” nominal diameter and larger shall be totally dimensioned to allow their
prefabrication, the pipe support subcontractor shall check possible deviations as consequence of
admissible tolerance in the plant erection or build them so that it might be adjusted “in situ”.

2.1.Support location

Location of different elements used for piping supports shall be established according to the following
criteria:

- Proximity of existing structures on or from which the support device can be constructed.
- If a pipe support structure is required, this must be as small as possible.
- Possibility to construct a common support for several pipes.
- The support device must not obstruct free spaces required for maintenance and operation of valves,
equipment, motors, etc.
- Distance between adjacent supports in a sole pipe must not cause in it, stress values higher than
permitted in the corresponding Code.
- To be as close as possible to the points where loads concentration might exist (valves, filters, etc.).
- To be as close as possible to the points where a sharp change in a pipe direction is produced.
- Must warranty that the real performance of the pipe system are in accordance with the hypothesis taken
into consideration in the studies of “Piping Stress Analysis Calculations” of the system.
- To receive as less influences as possible from piping contraction or expansion when it might exist.
- To limit the action of the pipe on the equipment to which it is connected, in order that the forces and
moments caused on nozzles are within the values permitted by the equipment manufacturer.
- In case that the equipment is disconnected for maintenance, the necessity of a minimum of temporary
supports shall be considered.

THE PRESENT DOCUMENT OR DRAWING IS THE PROPERTY OF TECNICAS REUNIDAS AND SHALL NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUNSTANCES BE TOTALLY OR PARTIALLY, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, TRANSFERRED, REPRODUCED, COPIED,

- Supports must be reasonably inspected in order to make sure that its operability remains along the time.
Special considerations shall be taken in the spring installation with respect to the gage orientation in
order to make it visible.

2.2.Support type

The nature and type of piping support depends basically on:

- Its location.
- Its function.
- Nature and state of the pipe to be supported.

2.2.1. According to its location

Supports may be located on horizontal or vertical pipe runs, avoiding doing it on different runs of the
mentioned. In any case supports may be grouped under two principle categories:

a) Supports in which the supporting element is basically subjected to compression stresses. (Pedestal
type supports).
b) Supports in which the supporting element is subjected to tension stresses (hanging type supports).

In both cases, between the pipe and the support itself, a certain transition element generally exists, whose
basic function is:

- To facilitate the interconnection between both elements (e.g. horizontal trunnions for hanging a vertical
run of pipe).
- To produce a better distribution of loads in the pipe (e.g. cradles welded to the pipe).
- To avoid possible corrosion caused by the contact of different materials (e.g. clamps of alloy steel on
pipes of alloy steel also).

2.2.2. According to its function

Supports may have as a sole purpose, the absorption of pipe weight in order of not produce in the pipe
stress values higher than permitted. In this case the supports are subjected to the action of a vertical force
which is the weight that they have to support. If the support point has been considered, in the studies of
the piping thermal stresses, without vertical movement, the support located in that point could be vertically
rigid.

THE PRESENT DOCUMENT OR DRAWING IS THE PROPERTY OF TECNICAS REUNIDAS AND SHALL NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUNSTANCES BE TOTALLY OR PARTIALLY, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, TRANSFERRED, REPRODUCED, COPIED,

On the other side, it shall be necessary to have an elastic device (e.g. spring) when the point in which the
support has to be located is subjected to a vertical displacement, which if it is not allowed, it could cause
in the pipe a stress higher than permitted.

Sometimes devices are installed to prevent and/or to limit the free movement of the pipe in a certain point.

According to their way of work, these devices may be:

a) Guide, if it acts against the transversal displacement of the pipe.

b) Directional anchor, if it acts against the axial displacements of the pipe.
c) Anchor, if it acts against the transversal, axial and vertical displacements and besides restricts rotation
in all three axes.
d) Hold Down: limits vertical movement

The objective of these devices is to control the direction and the orientation of the movement which is
originated on the pipe as a consequence of the thermal expansion.
In general, when selecting the type of required support for a pipe, it shall be taken into account not only
the weight to be supported and the thermal conditions of the pipe, but any other phenomenon that could
affect the system (equipment settlement, vibrations, water hammer, etc.).
Additional temporary supports may be installed for cleaning and testing during erection. These supports
will be clearly marked and identified on drawings.

2.2.3. According to the nature and state of the pipe to be supported

Considering that the nature and/or state of the pipe to be supported affect to the location and design of the
support, the following groups may be established:

a) Supports for steel pipes at ambient or hot temperature, internally lined or not with other material different
from the pipe base material.

The following considerations shall be taken into account:

a.1. The effect of the pipe temperature on the transition element and support structure.
a.2. The material type of the transition element to avoid local corrosions caused by the unlikeness with
the base material of the pipe.
a.3. The thermal treatments of the pipe to be supported, in order to avoid transition element welds. In case
that its use is indispensable, this transition element shall be marked on the isometric drawing in order
to be considered in the construction of the pipe line.

a.4. The nature of the possible internal lining considering its fragility in order to admit a maximum deflection
in the span between supports and its performance against local welding to couple transition
supporting elements.
a.5. The effect to the pipe size, in order to arrange a transition element to avoid potential local
overstressing that may damage the pipe as a consequence of dead weight, additional actions due to
thermal strain or actions of any other nature that might exist. (Calculation detail in point 3.3.1 of this
specification)
a.6. The thickness of insulation for insulated pipes in order to arrange a transition element which stands
out of the insulation.

When insulation is only for personnel protection, pipe may be considered as not being insulated at the
support point, cutting the insulation in such a way that a free axial movement of ±100 mm in both directions
is allowed.

b) Supports for cold pipes.

The contents of this point apply to cold pipes not considered cryogenic.

The following considerations shall be taken into account:

b.1. To avoid as much as possible to break the insulation steam barrier, the transition element of support
shall be located outside of this barrier. Therefore the compression resistance of the insulation will be
considered for the sake of necessity of substitution, in the application zone of the support, by high
compressive strength special material, such as “Permali”, “Neoimprex” or high density polyurethane”.
b.2. The transition elements which necessarily must be welded to the pipe shall be of the same or
equivalent quality material and shall be properly insulated in order to avoid icing.
b.3. The transition elements directly joined to the pipe shall not be in direct contact with the support, but
there must exist between both a sufficiently resistant insulated element (high compressive strength
special material).
b.4. Supports, whose supporting points are cold vessels, shall be connected to the existing clips arranging
between both a sufficiently resistant insulation element (high compressive strength special material).

c) Supports for plastic pipes.

The following considerations shall be taken into account:

c.1. The special flexibility and low mechanical resistance of these pipes in order to place the supports with
adequate short spans, taking into account that the working stresses should be small enough to avoid
damages (cracks, openings, etc.) in the pipe that would break its chemical barrier.

de la Refinería de Talara

DOCUMENT NUMBER: 2070-GEN-PNG-SPE-004 Page 10 of 24

c.2. The inconvenience of arranging a transition element glued to the pipe because its union has points
of low or no mechanical resistance (wearing cradles are excluded).
c.3. All transition elements shall be attached to the pipe by means of clamps, which must have in their
interior face a rubber band in order to avoid damage to the pipe due to excessive tightening.
c.4. All direct contact between pipes and supports shall be avoided particularly in those points where
displacements could exist because a superficial deterioration in the pipe caused by the friction should
damage gravely the integrity of the pipe.
c.5. For those pipes that due to their characteristics or their operation conditions might cause situations
of excessive elasticity, it shall be necessary to support them in a continuous way. (e.g. with steel light
angle at bottom).

2.3.Transition element

The transition element is any intermediate device between the pipe to be supported and the support itself.
This device does not exist when the mechanical resistance of the pipe considering its temperature at the
supporting point, heat transmission, etc., allows it.
The transition elements more often used are:

- Shoes

For insulated hot pipes where the heat lost must be avoided. Standards SA4-3858A to SA4-3862A
attached to this Specification.
The height of the shoe shall be such that the bottom of the insulation is 20mm minimum above the support.
Insulated hot piping with 75mm thick or less insulation shall have a 100mm pipe shoe. Insulated hot piping
with insulation thickness greater than 75mm up to 125mm shall have a 150mm pipe shoe.

- Cradles/Saddles

They must be used for pipes directly supported, and they have a double mission: to avoid the direct friction
of the support on the pipe or insulation, eliminating the punctual erosion and/or corrosion in the contact
zone and producing a better distribution of the load in the supporting point on the pipe wall or the insulation.
Standards SA4-3761A and SA4-3858A to SA4-3860A attached to this specification.
To avoid potential local overstressing that may damage the pipe as a consequence of dead weight,
additional actions due to thermal strain or actions of any other nature that might exist; the following
considerations shall be followed:

D ≤ 6” reinforcement shall be specifically determined

8” ≥ D ≥ 14” Cradle if D/t + 3CA > 65
Cradle if D/t < 95
16" ≤ D ≤ 36"
Saddle if D/t ≥ 95
D > 36" Saddle

Where,
D: outside diameter of the pipe (mm)
t: minimum wall thickness when fully corroded (mm)
CA: corrosion allowance (mm)

- Lugs for hanging

Pieces made of a flat plate and drilled, which are welded directly to the pipe.
They can be good substitutes of the clamps in pipes less than 10" nominal diameter but its use is generally
limited due to the increasing of local stresses that it produces on pipe wall. Standard SA4-3728A attached
to this specification.

- Pipe clamps

Generally used for hanging pipes, they can have two or three bolts depending on its specific work. They
are also used as part of shoes which cannot be welded directly to the pipe or when this weld is not
desirable. Standards SA4-3710A; SA4-3711A; SA4-3720A and SA4-3721A attached to this specification.
The union by pairs of halves clamps shall be made by means of hexagonal head bolts threaded in their
total length and with a nut.
When on stainless steel pipes carbon steel clamps have to be used, these shall have on their interior part
(contact zone) a thin plate of TEFLON for pipe temperature up to 240°C or a thin plate of stainless steel
for higher temperatures. It should be 0.5mm thick (max.) and 20mm wider than clamp width.

- Trunnions/Floor Stands

Made with straight pieces of pipes and welded directly to the base of the pipe as if it were a 90º branch
connection but without drilling the pipe. Standards SA4-3781A; SA4-3784A; SA4-3785A and SA4-3853A
to SA4-3855A attached to this specification.

- Special devices

When the nature, disposition, etc. of the pipe to be supported or the support itself requires it, special
devices should be designed (generally made with plates, shapes and/or tubes) in order that they might do
the work of a transition element.

Transition elements being directly welded to a pipe shall be of the same or equivalent quality material as
the pipe. Acceptable substitutes for weld-on transition elements to be used in alloy systems are bolt-on
types fabricated from carbon steel or austenitic stainless steel as specified in TR drawings.

2.4.Supporting element. Supports.

Support is any device, capable to admit the loads that the pipe will transmit to it. This transmission can be
direct or through adequate transition elements.
In general, the supports shall be made of steel material (plates, shapes, tie rods, etc.). Their resting point
is often the ground (on adequate concrete die), platforms or existing steel structures, existing concrete
structures or the vessels themselves (by means of previously welded clips), etc.
Preferably, the supports shall be removable; therefore the union to their supporting points shall be made
generally by means of bolts being those of expansion or chemical type when they are installed in concrete
structure. The bolts shall have metric and right-hand thread.

2.5.Elastic support. Springs.

When in a support point of a pipe, the vertical movement needs to be allowed, it is necessary to use
springs. The springs shall be those ones exiting in the market that have helicoidal supports, reserving the
use of any other type of spring for very exceptional cases; i.e. disk, hydraulic and counter weight supports.
Selection of springs shall be established taking into account the following recommendations:

- Hydraulic or counter weight supports can be used only in special cases and requires Client’s approval.
- The spring type shall be selected based on the real possibilities of connecting to the pipe. There are
basically two different types; the hanging and the supporting type.
- The spring’s series shall be selected based on the actual movement that it is allowed, there are
basically three standard series of variable springs with displacements up to 45, 90 and 180mm.
- The size of the spring shall be selected based on the load to be supported. There are basically twenty
sizes with loads between 20 and 12.000 Kg.
- The spring selection shall be made for the working conditions (load and movement) of the pipe and it
must be also valid for the occasional conditions (start up, shut down and any other special conditions).

THE PRESENT DOCUMENT OR DRAWING IS THE PROPERTY OF TECNICAS REUNIDAS AND SHALL NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUNSTANCES BE TOTALLY OR PARTIALLY, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, TRANSFERRED, REPRODUCED, COPIED,

- Every spring will come gauged from shop to its installation load and with an adequate locking device,
to avoid its normal operation during the hydraulic test. Such locking devices must be retired after
hydraulic test and before the star-up of the plant.
- When a large difference of load exists between operation and installation conditions, the effects that
such difference produces on the connected pipe or equipment during installation condition shall be
analyzed.
- Every spring shall have clearly indicated in its scale gage the positions corresponding to the cold and
hot condition of the pipe.
- The stops for hydraulic test as well as the structural elements of the springs shall be able to support
2.5 times the maximum allowable working load as a minimum. If the load in the hydraulic test condition
was larger than the above mentioned value, temporary supports shall be installed before and
maintained during the hydraulic test in order to complement the resistance of such elements. These
temporary supports shall be partial or entirely removed after the test, as indicated on the support
drawings.
- Variable load springs shall be installed whenever the load variation as consequence of the expected
movement (movement x spring rigidity) does not exceed 25% of the operation load. If the load variation
is larger than the allowed, constant load springs or counter weight devices shall be studied.
- The total travel to be specified in a constant load spring shall be the maximum range (upwards plus
downwards movements), which produces the most unfavorable condition plus a fixed quantity specified
by the selected vendor.

2.6.Antivibration supports

All process piping connected to reciprocating compressors will be subject to an analog study (beat
analysis) and active mechanical response.
This study will include press cylinders and equipment between the compressor and the largest container
placed upstream and downstream of it.
As circuit limits will be also considered the "knock-out drums."
In addition to the normal considerations that have to be taken into account for every line, when supporting
lines connected to reciprocating compressors, the following points shall be taken into account in the design
and the arrangement of the supports:

a) Minimize the level of pulsations of gas that could overload the compressor and cause forces on the
pipe difficult to restrict with conventional supports.

THE PRESENT DOCUMENT OR DRAWING IS THE PROPERTY OF TECNICAS REUNIDAS AND SHALL NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUNSTANCES BE TOTALLY OR PARTIALLY, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, TRANSFERRED, REPRODUCED, COPIED,

b) Separate the system's natural mechanical frequencies of the acoustic frequencies of the gas, to
avoid possible resonances in the system.

To comply with the two points mentioned above the use of antivibration supports is required. Standards
SA4-3880A to SA4-3882A attached to this Specification.
The suction and discharge manifolds of reciprocating compressors will be supported from the ground to
facilitate the installation of restrictions that dampen the vibrations, hence, so these manifolds must be set
as close to the ground as possible

Suction lines, interstage and discharge of reciprocating compressors shall not be supported from the
structure of the deck when it exists.

3. PIPING SUPPORT CALCULATION

The mechanical design of piping supports shall be made taking into consideration the rules established in
the norms and codes mentioned in point 1.3, as well as, any other normally accepted practice currently in
use.
This design is to ensure the capability of the pipe support to support or restrain loads in the most
unfavorable situation, taking into account:

- Weight Loads
- Hydraulic test Loads
- Thermal loads
- Wind and Earthquake Loads
- Reaction Forces at Relief Valves
- Impact Loads

The maximum allowable unit stresses for structural steel members and bolts shall be in accordance with
the AISC Specification.
The maximum allowable unit stresses for pipe-supporting elements and trunnions shall be in accordance
with ASME B31.3, Process Piping.

THE PRESENT DOCUMENT OR DRAWING IS THE PROPERTY OF TECNICAS REUNIDAS AND SHALL NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUNSTANCES BE TOTALLY OR PARTIALLY, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, TRANSFERRED, REPRODUCED, COPIED,

3.1.Friction Forces

In those supports where horizontal movements exist with the consequent generation of friction forces, the
following friction coefficients shall be considered:

Surfaces in Contact Friction Coefficient

Steel - Concrete 0,45
Steel - Steel 0,40
S. Steel – Lubrite (T ≥ 200ºC) 0,10
S. Steel – Teflon (T ≤ 200ºC) 0,10
Teflon – Teflon (T ≤ 200ºC) 0,10

In any case, the recommendation of the manufacturer of these materials shall be considered.

3.2.Forces on anchors

The anchors, besides of resisting forces produced by the pipe weight, occasional loads on the pipe, etc.,
must be designed to support the loads produced by the thermal expansion of the pipe.
Anchor structures for one or more pipes shall be designed for the largest developed force considering its
normal and abnormal operation conditions and taking into account that not all pipes with a possible of

5. GENERAL NOTES, PREFABRICATION AND ERECTION

5.1.General
- All supports shall have an identification mark. This mark shall be the same as that shown on piping
drawings, unless otherwise indicated in such piping drawings.
- All supports shall be designed to permit dismantling the supported pipes.
- All dimensions shall be in mm. or sexagesimal degrees.
- Orientation angles shall be measured in clockwise direction regarding to Plant North.
- Supports are dimensionally valid for prefabrication; however, due to admissible construction tolerances
they shall be checked before fabrication or constructed in such a way that they permit adjusting “in
situ".
- All springs must remain blocked in order to avoid overloads on pipes or equipment nozzles until
hydrostatic testing has been done.
- If during the installation of the springs, the load gage made in the shop had been accidentally lost, use
the existing regulating devices (turnbuckles, threaded pieces, etc.) in order to reach the correct load
indicated on the scale of the spring.
- When a plate must be bended and the external bending radius is not specifically indicated, this shall
be twice its thickness for plates up to 10 mm. and three times its thickness for thicker plates.
- For supports where different steel shapes than those graphically represented on the standard drawings
are required, the reference for the substitution criteria shall be as indicated on standard drawing nº
SA4-3702A.
- Pipes shall be temporary supported during their installation and until the final supports have been
installed in order to avoid overloads on pipes or equipment nozzles.
- Special attention shall be paid to pipes resting on brackets by means of trunnions in order to assure
that the pipe weight is supported by the brackets and not by the equipment nozzle.
- Vent holes made in cradles and trunnions shall be plugged by means of solid grease if the operation
temperature of the line where they are welded is 100ºC or lower.
- Construction of supports types CS1 to CS4 (see drawings SA4-3764A to SA4-3767A) shall be made
maintaining the existing material reinforcements of pavement. If this is not possible, a new material
reinforcement shall be properly joined to the existing one.
- Any support element being directly welded to a pipe shall be of the same or equivalent quality material
as the pipe, unless otherwise indicated.
- A Stainless Steel thin plate of 1mm thick and 100mm wide shall be welded on top of C.S. pipe supports,
when not insulated S.S. pipes rest directly on them.
- When a plate has to be fixed to concrete with expansion bolts and a shape is required to be welded on
this plate, the weld between them shall always be made after the plate has been fixed.

THE PRESENT DOCUMENT OR DRAWING IS THE PROPERTY OF TECNICAS REUNIDAS AND SHALL NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUNSTANCES BE TOTALLY OR PARTIALLY, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, TRANSFERRED, REPRODUCED, COPIED,

- Small bore connections (1.5” and smaller) to reciprocating compressor lines shall be provided in the
field by pipe support subcontractor with stiffening plates (see drawing SA4-3871A).

5.2. Welding

- The union of different constitutive elements of a support shall be made using continuous bead welding
unless bolted unions or other type of union is indicated.
- The welding of supports, anchors, trunnion, guides, etc. to pipelines must be made with approved
welding procedures as required in the GP-18-07-01 “Welding Procedures Version (3.0.0 JAN 2010,
except DIOL 3.0.0 A, JAN 2010)”.
- The throat of the fillet weld shall have a minimum thickness of 0.7 times the thickness of the thinner
plate to be welded, unless otherwise indicated.
- Welds of any pipe support element welded to a pipe shall be made in such a way that the wall of the
pipe shall not be burnt through.
- The use of rivets is not permitted.
- Welding of support elements directly welded to pipes shall be submitted to PWHT Project Specific
Requirements.

5.3.Bolting and thread elements

- Threaded elements shall have metric and right hand thread unless otherwise indicated.
- When tie rods are used for hanging pipes, they shall be designed so that their length can be adjusted
“in situ”. If it is not possible, the same effect can be obtained by using turnbuckles between the rods.
Standard SA4-3726A attached to this specification.
- The minimum sizes of rods for hangers shall be the following:

M-10 for pipes ≤ 2” nominal diameter

M-12 for pipes ≥ 2 ½ “ nominal diameter

- All bolting unions shall be fixed by using a nut and lock nut.
- The diameter of all bolt holes shall be 2mm larger than the corresponding bolt size and unless otherwise
noted shall be disposed on the axis of scratch gage of steel shapes.
- Expansion bolts shall be HILTI-HSL-3 types, unless otherwise indicated.
- Chemical bolts shall be HILTI-HVA/HAS types, unless otherwise indicated.

19-01-01 “Paint and Protective Coatings (Version 3 0 0, APR 2004 except DIOL 3 0 0 A , APR 2004)”.
Special attention shall be paid to the surfaces that are not accessible when the support is installed in order
to provide the appropriate protection before erection. At these not accessible surfaces, the "finish second
coat" is not required.

1 SCOPE

1.1 This document applies to piping systems for cold services (design
temperatures between ambient to -40ºC) and cryogenic services (design
temperatures -40ºC and below). For piping systems with temperatures below -
179ºC, the risk of oxygen condensation shall be considerate. Also pipe
supports included herein shall be able to operate with dual temperature
systems in the temperature range from bellow ambient up to 120ºC. For dual
temperature systems above 120ºC Cellular Glass shall be used instead of
PUF.

1.2 The pipe supports elements herein described shall acts as a transition
component between pipes and support surroundings. These elements shall
provide a thermal barrier between ambient and the pipe surface. Likewise,
supports shall provide a vapour barrier to prevent internal vapour
condensation.

1.3 In order to obtain an adequate pipe support according to the requirements

established by the stress analyst, this elements could be combined with the
rests of support components included in General Piping Support Specification

5.5.9 P.U.F. cradle shall be of single or multi layer moulded construction. The
total insulation thickness for pipe supports assemble shall be equal to
actual pipe work insulation thickness.

5.5.10 Longitudinal and/or circumferential seams in the P.U.F. Cradles are not
acceptable since they do not maintain the structural integrity of the
support during thermal movements of piping system. P.U.F. cradles that
are not in half ring hollow (180deg) sections are not acceptable.

5.5.11 Thicknesses for each P.U.F cradle layer shall concur with line insulation
layers.

5.5.12 Inner diameter of the inner P.U.F. cradle shall be calculated as the pipe
outside diameter plus pipe outside tolerances in accordance with ASTM
A-530/A 530M-03.

5.5.13 P.U.F. cradle dimensional tolerance shall be in accordance with ASTM

C-585. The thickness of each cradle shall no vary more than ±1.5mm
from its design thickness. P.U.F. cradle of minimum diameter (minus
tolerance) will fit a pipe of maximum diameter (plus tolerance). Likewise,
a P.U.F. cradle of maximum diameter (plus tolerance) will fit a pipe of
minimum diameter (minus tolerance) and still have sufficient clearance
between the two halves of the P.U.F. cradle for disc springs to transfer a
clamping force to the pipe under all operating conditions. The ovality of
the pipe should also be considered.

5.5.14 All exposed cut surfaces of the P.U.F. without skin shall be coated with a
layer of fire-retardant weather barrier mastic (Material ID 11). This is to
protect the foam between lime of insulation and line insulation

5.8.1 Installation of pipe supports shall be done in a dry environment. Care

shall be taken to ensure that the pipe/shoe interface is dry and clean.

5.8.2 Do not use any adhesive between outer pipe’s surface and the inner
surface of the inner P.U.F. cradle layer. Thermal contraction of Pipe
could damage the inner P.U.F. cradle layer surface.

5.8.3 All surfaces of the polyurethane which require adhesive bonding or

mastic sealing shall be provided with an appropriate anchor profile
(surface roughness).

5.8.4 For multi layer application, the P.U.F. layers of the upper P.U.F. cradle
shall be supplied unbounded, in order to be bonded at field for ease of
installation and adjustment.

5.8.5 For multi layer application, the P.U.F. Layers of the bottom P.U.F.
cradle shall be bonded at shop.

5.8.6 For multi layer application, the P.U.F. cradle layers shall be bonded
together with a central band of adhesive (Material ID 8) with a width of
about 20% of the arc length of the contact area, in order to avoid
increasing the bending stiffness due to the total restriction of relative
displacements between layers.

5.8.7 Both, upper and bottom P.U.F. cradles shall be supplied with the vapour
barrier bonded on the outer surface of the outer P.U.F. layer, covering
the complete surface (180deg).

5.8.8 Vendor shall supply two vapour barrier strip bands of 100mm width, to
seal both longitudinal joins with a overlapping of 50mm for each side.
The Vapour barrier bands shall be bounded at field.

5.8.9 Protection shield shall not be bounded to vapour barrier. The vapour
barrier has an aluminized film over its external surface. If the protection
shield is bonded to this surface, any traction force applied over the
protection shield (even by gravity forces) could be transfer to the
aluminized film through the adhesive, releasing the aluminized
protection film.

5.8.10 TR recommends do not bond the protection shield to the steel cradle
clamp, because it will difficult the installation of the support, especially
for overlapping the shields and/or vapour barrier.

immediately reported to The Client or his nominated agent prior to
performing any repair work.

5.9.2 Damages to the vapour barrier shall be repaired as follow:

- Brush sealant into the wound.

- Apply foil tape over the complete area of the wound ensuring a minimum
of 35mm over lap on all edges.

5.9.3 Significant damages could happen during handling the P.U.F. elements
at corners/sides. For damages up to 15% of the area shall be repaired
using a suitable density of field applied P.U.F. and then shaping to the
correct contour of the surrounding area. Damages above 15% of the

1. SCOPE

This document provides the basis to select the size of the shapes used in different support
configurations according to pipe diameter and/or maximum allowable loads.

For those support configurations not included in this document the selection criteria established on
their corresponding Standard Drawing shall be followed.

The selected shapes are the minimum recommended for the configuration and maximum established
loads. Support engineer shall be aware about the transmitted loads on the existing structure, taking
into account the maximum loads that the existing structure is able to withstand.

Any variation of the support configuration or load conditions established in this document shall be
analysed.

The following shapes have been established as recommended, according to the symbology indicated
bellow:

- L40: L40x40x6
- L60: L60x60x6
- L80: L80x80x8
- L100: L100x100x10
- L120: L120x120x12
- U: UPN shape (e g. U100: UPN-100)
- I: IPN shape(e g. I120: IPN-100)
- H: HEB shape (e g. H140: HEB-140)

If, for any reason, the recommended shapes cannot be used, the steel substitution criteria shall
consider shapes with higher values of Moment of Inertia (I) and Section Modulus (W) in both axes
than the recommended ones.

CALCULATION AND SUPPORT OF ≤ 1 1/2” PIPES Page 3 of 53

1 OBJECT

The object of this document is to have a quick guide for calculation and support of ≤ 1 ½ ” pipes
designed at Field following the ASME B31.3, without requiring performing formal analysis using
informatics programs
.
In this document, and in order to facilitate and standardize the supports work at field:
• The maximum allowable spans for straight pipe configurations with pipe bends and
intermediate turns are defined.
• The maximum allowable spans for pipe configurations with eccentric or not eccentric
concentrated sustained loads are defined.
• The maximum allowable spans for pipe configurations under expansion thermal effects due
to the temperature of the fluid that it’s being transported are defined.
• Standardize types of supports are defined.

2 SCOPE

This document sets out the methods that have to be used to place and design supports for sustained
and thermal loads for pipes of 1 ½ ” and smaller that haven’t been supported in the edited isometrics
of the Project. This is the job of the mechanic contractor of prefabrication and assembly.

3 APPLICATION

This guide has to be used by all the personal at Field that has been assigned to design the supports
of small pipe (1 ½ ” and smaller) in conventional Industrial Plants, so as to the assembly supervision
of pipes that fulfill the following requirements:

• Nominal Diameter equal or smaller than 1 ½ ”.

• Operation Temperature equal or lower than 400ºC.
• Pipe Material: Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel or Alloy Steel.

4.5 Pipe Conditions

For each combination of Nominal diameter and Schedule in this guide, it has been
considered the following pipe conditions:

• Not insulated pipe full of water.

• Insulated pipe full of water at a temperature not higher than 400ºC.

4.6 Technical Recommendations for Piping Support

Listed below are some recommendations for the location of the different elements used for piping
supports before performing a flexibility analysis:

• To be as close as possible to the points where loads concentration might exist (valves,
filters, etc.).

• Support shall not be placed in elbows. If necessary, the support should be placed at the
closest straight pipe section to the elbow.

• Avoid placing supports for sustained loads in vertical pipe sections in order not to weld
elements to the pipe. The supports should be placed at the adjacent horizontal sections.

• When possible, guides shall be placed in vertical pipe sections in order to have a better
stability of the pipe.

• As a rule, use rigid supports. In case hangers are used, they never have to be under
compression loads. For hangers, the maximum total length pipe-structural attachment
should not be longer than 1800mm.

• Even when it is not necessary according to the flexibility analysis, guides will be placed
at horizontal pipe sections to provide stability to the system and avoid some possible
vibrations.

• In order to relieve possible thermal loads in the pipes or equipments, supports will be
placed to control the thermal displacements of the pipe.

• When the operation temperature of the system is higher than 50ºC, or big displacements
are estimated, some rules must be followed for supporting the pipe in order not to
prevent the free dilation of the pipe or the equipment movements.

• As a rule, the supports must be situated near existing structures, making easier the
design and manufacture of the support, and minimizing the cost of the auxiliary structure
between the support and the existing structure.

• If the support is from an existing bigger pipe, the diameter of this pipe shall be not less
than 3”.

• The position of the supports shall not clash with the weld bead between straight pipe
sections or accessories (valves, elbows, flanges, and so on), leaving at least 50 mm
between the weld bead of the support and the existing weld bead.

• It is very important that the support does not obstruct the pathways or operation areas.

• When possible, the support points shall be located at the same location for various
pipes, using common auxiliary structures, reducing in this way the costs.

• At the Racks, sleepers or horizontal straight pipe sections, guides shall be placed in
order to avoid excessive lateral movements due to the wind action. The guides shall be
located every 6 m, at least.

• In vertical pipes, the guides shall be located as shown in the following table:

Nominal Diameter Distance between vertical guides [m]

≤1” 3.6
1 1/2” 4.8
2” 5.7

• A Stainless Steel thin plate of 1mm thick and 100mm wide shall be welded on top of
Carbon Steel pipe supports, when not insulated Stainless Steel pipes rest directly on
them.

• The binding of the different parts that form the support shall be done with continuous
welding, if nothing else is indicated.

• The weld bead in the supports shall be at least 0.7 times the thickness of the plate that it
is being welded.

5 DISTANCE BETWEEN SUPPORTS

The usual deflection limit is, approximately, 1/2” for all lines. An important reason to limit
the deflection of the pipe is to make the pipe rigid enough to avoid the resonance frequency in
case of vibrations. For most pipes the natural frequency (Fn) is ≥ four cycles per second (4 Hz):

3.13 9.80
Fn = ó d=
d Fn2

If Fn ≥ 4 Hz in the formula above, then the deflection is d=0.5”, that it is almost the same
deflection that has been set out for all lines.

6 ANALISYS OF PIPES UNDER SUSTAINED LOADS AND THERMAL LOADS.

In some piping systems it is necessary to consider, besides the weight of the pipe and its
elements, the thermal expansion produced by the temperature of the transported fluid and the
displacements of the equipments.

6.1 Types of Stresses to be analyzed

6.1.1 Stresses due to sustained loads or primary stresses.

The sum of the longitudinal stresses in any component in a piping system due to sustained
loads such as: weight of the pipe, insulation, fluid, loads (concentrated and distributed),
applied moments and pressure. This stress can be controlled, supporting correctly the piping
system.

Stresses due to sustained loads are calculated with the following formula:

Where:
A, B, C are dimensionless constants that depend on each code.
According to code B31.3, A, B y C are equal to 1.
P is the internal pressure of the pipe (psi).
Do is the external diameter of the pipe (inches).
t thickness of the pipe (to the standard thickness it is necessary to subtract the corrosion,
the fabrication tolerance and the welding factor) (inches).
i stress intensification factor (dimensionless).
Ma bending moment due to the sustained loads (lb.-inch).
Z section modulus of pipe.
Sh basic allowable stress at maximum metal temperature expected during the displacement
cycle under analysis
The stress at minimum metal temperature, Sc, is determined from Sy (Yield strength) by 2/3 or
from Su (Tensile strength) by 1/3, the lesser of the two. (See appendix A of ASME B31.3)
For example:
a) A material with a Sy = 30 ksi and a Su = 75 ksi, then the Sc will be:
30x2/3= 20 ksi 70x1/3= 23.3 ksi el Sc = 20 ksi
b) Another material with Sy = 65 ksi and Su = 90 ksi, its Sc will be:
65x2/3 = 43.3 ksi 90x1/3=30 ksi el Sc = 30 ksi

6.1.2 Stresses due to expansion loads or secondary stresses

These stresses are generated due to the reactions at the restrictions (guides, directional
anchors and so on) imposed to the system. These reactions are caused by the contraction
and expansion of the material, due to the temperature changes in the system. They can be
controlled, varying the design so the system has more flexibility (making loops or stretching
pipe sections), relocating the supports or using elastic elements (expansion joints).

The stresses due to thermal expansion are calculated with the following formula:

Where:
f is a factor to quantify the cycling effect.
Sc basic allowable stress at minimum metal temperature expected during the displacement
cycle under analysis.
Sh basic allowable stress at maximum metal temperature expected during the displacement
cycle under analysis.

If Sh > Sl the difference between them can be added to the term 0.25Sh

Dif = Sh- Sl Sa = f (1.25 Sc + 0.25 Sh + Sh – Sl)

The correction factor “f” represents the fatigue of the material due to the full displacement
cycles during the expected service life of the piping system. It can be calculated using the

7 MANUAL METHODS FOR STRESS ANALYSIS

7.1 Simple method of ASME B31.3

ASME B31.3 includes an empirical equation that it is used when the systems are uniform and
they don’t have more than two fixed points. This method is used to determine if the system is
flexible or not.

Where:
D: external diameter of the pipe mm (inches)
2 2 2 1/2
y: the total thermal displacement y= (∆x + ∆y + ∆z ) mm (inches)
L: distance between the two fixed points m (feet)
U: straight-line distance between the two fixed points m (pies)

7.2 GUIDED CANTILEVER method

This method is used for systems with uniform pipe wall thicknesses, with two fixed points,
without intermediate restrictions. The pipe sections must be straight and if there is a change
in the direction, this must be in a 90º angle.

The thermal expansion of one of the pipe sections has to be absorbed by the perpendicular
pipe section. The amount of thermal expansion that a section can absorb is inversely
proportional to its rigidity. As the pipe sections have identical cross sections, their rigidities
vary as the inverse of their lengths to cube.

There should be any branch connection. In case there is a branch, its effect can be not taken
into account when the diameter of the branch is lower than half of the diameter of the
analyzed pipe. However, we must verify that the branch can absorb the thermal expansion of
the header at the branch connection.

While the system adapts to the thermal expansion, the pipe sections behave as anchored
beams in one end and guided in the other (that is the reason for the method name).

7.3 QUI TRUONG method

This method is based in the Guided Cantiliver method, and in the fact that the maximum
stresses that can be generated in a pipe system connected to an equipment vary.

a) For vessels and Racks (CS)

L = 7 .2 ∆ × D , SE=15000 psi

b) For pumps and compressors

L = 12 . 45 ∆ × D , SE=5000 psi,

Where:
D External diameter of the pipe in inches.
∆ Expansion of the pipe in inches.
L Length of the pipe in feet.

General notes about manual methods

- The manual methods are simplified methods for the analysis of easy pipe sections.
- They can be used for the analysis of non critical pipes when a high security margin is
acceptable.
- The limitations of each method have to be always taken into account. No extrapolations
of values out of the tables and graphics shall be done, because this mehods have
limitations depending on the diameter and configuration.

Using this method we can also say that the system is flexible. It is necessary to properly
distribute the guides and the resting points, in order not to rest flexibility to the system and to
minimize the reactions generated at them.

7.4.3 Guided Cantilever method:

We are going to check if this system is flexible using the Guided Cantiliver method.

We are going to solve this example graphically.

First of all we calculate the deflections at the elbows. At the temperature of 200ºF the
expansion coefficient is 0.0099 inch/foot.

We have to verify that the pipe section of 2500mm (8.2’) can absorb that thermal expansion.

In the next page there is a graphic where we can find out which is the necessary pipe section
length to absorb 0.129 inches of thermal expansion.

Before using the graphic we have to know the value Sa = f (1.25Sc +0.25Sh)

For this kind of material the basic allowable stress at minimum metal temperature is Sc= 20 ksi
and the basic allowable stress at maximum metal temperature is Sh= 20 ksi, assuming f=1:

The line in red shows how the graphic has to be used. With the calculated deflection and the
diameter of the pipe we move from the right side of the graphic to the left side of it. Then using
the value of the calculated Sa and the intersection with the line that comes from the graphic on
the left we can find out the minimum pipe section length necessary to absorb the thermal
expansion. For the example that it is being studied, the length is 6 feet = 1829mm, so the
system is flexible.

8 SUPPORT CRITERIA

Before analysing the stress of a line, we must review the distribution and location of possible
support points on the line taking into account the following criteria and making use of structures
and available support locations near to the line.

The following shall be taken into account:

8.1.1 Supports shall be placed as close as possible to concentrated load points (valves, flanges,
etc.). In order to prevent failures and/or deformations due to primary stress, leaks in flanges
and also assist in maintenance.

8.1.2 Guides shall be distributed in racks to prevent excessive lateral movements caused by wind
and other possible occasional loads. Its distribution is as follows:

Pipe Φ Distance (m)

≤2” 6

8.1.3 The above applies for sleepers for ≤ 2” lines, which generally will be at the ends. The problem
resides in that site personnel usually walks on pipes when doing maintenance, and by some
hit, can remove the pipe from its line of action. Therefore it is advisable to guide them at each
support point, except in changes in direction, to allow movement stress.

8.1.4 In towers: the first support shall be placed as close as possible to the nozzle, in order to
minimize expansion variation (tower-pipe) and not create increased stress on the nozzle and
support. This support should have displacement, as the force resulting on restrictions will come
from the variation in displacements between nozzle and support. Guides are then placed on the
pipe down the tower (if stresses and calc permit), to counteract the effects of wind and seismic.
See the following table identifying. Guide distance “h” (feet).

On establishing the elevations of the guides it shall be necessary to check interferences

between clips or plates welded to the vessels (belonging to supports), and other elements
such as flanges, nozzle reinforcements, platform support structure and weld strands.

We are also provided an easy guide for placing supports and guides in the following figure:

If the tower is very high and the line to support comes from the top of the tower it may be
advisable to place a second support point to distribute the loads. With this a horizontal change
in direction of the routing is required asking the design to make a turn otherwise it may be
necessary to placing springs on the line below the vertical support to distribute the loads

8.1.5 Supports generally may be attached to any column or vessel, but not in the case of heat
exchangers, reactors and regenerators. Independent structures shall be designed for this,
which shall be capable of supporting the lines.

8.1.6 Pressure safety valve discharge lines shall be supported in a manner that the force during
discharge does not impose higher load in line the supports . The supports shall be designed to
withstand the thrust loads and vibration due to discharge: Axial support “in outlet” ( horizontal
limit stop) or lateral restraint “ in inlet” in the same direction of reaction force shall be
necessary.

8.1.7 For rotating equipment generally the first support should be located as close as possible to the
nozzle, with type of support being adjustable, in order to align the nozzle with the pipe. Should
the unit be large and experience noticeable settlement the aim is to locate the support on the

same foundation, so that both the unit and support experience the same settlement. If this were
not possible, place a spring as first support, to eliminate any dithering settlements.

It may be also necessary to take into account the distance of the pipe run before any change
direction; if this is short, the first two supports may be adjustable. The adjustable supports
shall be represented in the stress calculation.

8.1.8 In the case of centrifugal compressors, pumps and in turbines, the first support in general shall
be a spring to relieve the nozzles of any load. A tentative table is presented below for placing
adjustable supports near the nozzles of rotating units.

Diameter Distance (mm)

≤2” 300

8.1.9 Supports shall also be designed to withstand the loads during the hydraulic test. Temporary
supports shall be required when exceeding the design values. In some cases, such as spring
supports in vertical towers, they shall be freed (no interlock), for a uniform distribution of loads
on support clips. In other cases, the spring cannot be designed to withstand the hydraulic test
values, and shall be replaced for a temporary support during the hydraulic test (isometrics shall
add the note as “substitution of spring for solid support during hydraulic test, to be removed and
spring installed after hydraulic test”).

8.1.10 In tanks, the first support can be as close or as far as required, as long as the following is taken
into account:

a) The valve placed on the nozzle: depending on its weight, actuator, motor, etc., may
require a support, which should be insttalled on the same foundations as the tank.
b) Residual settlement around the end of the tank is primarily used to determine the placing
of the first support. There is instant settlement, which occurs during the hydrostatic test
of the tank and another slower that may occur during the first few years (maybe 5), but
depending on ground characteristics, and can continue to settle during a longer time. In
general, the settlement assumed during the test is about 80% of total and 20% would be
residual. But these percentages can only be produced by soil studies. Therefore many
times the first support is placed after completing the hydraulic test, aligning the pipe with
the nozzle, and later adjusting the height of the support. This does not mean an
adjustable may be used. In cases in which settlement is considerable, it is advisable to
use springs in the first support points.

8.1.11 In the case of alternative equipment (compressors, pumps), the supports shall be designed to
avoid resonance of the system. Locating the supports such that the natural frequency of the
piping system is greatly different to that of units excitation frequency. It is also advisable not to
place the supports at equidistance apart. The supports of these systems shall be performed
with special supports (anti-vibration supports), the design of which avoids displacements in
lines due to vibration.

8.1.12 What must always be taken into account when placing supports near equipment is to protect
nozzle. In general, guides are placed nearby to avoid moments and also directional thresholds
to try to isolate the system from the rest of the pipe, so that, if a change is made downstream
from the directional limit, its effect does not reach the nozzles.

8.1.13 Naturally, supports are also placed to maintain the maximum spans allowed within project
alignments. For example, there are projects that accept deformations in vertical up to 1 inch,
others of ¾”, and others of ½”. But this also results from the load-deformation ratio.

8.1.14 Trunnions shall be represented in stress studies, as placing a guide or stop directly on the line
is not the same as placing the support at the trunnion base.

8.1.15 For control sets one elbow shall be anchored (or guide and stop) and the second guided.

8.1.16 A stop shall always be placed in battery limits to not transmit any displacements to other work
areas.

8.1.17 The distance between the weld of a pipe support and a circumferential weld shall not be less
than 50 mm for pipe thicknesses equal to or less than ½”; in the case of different pipe
thicknesses, the minimum shall be 4 times the pipe thickness.

8.1.18 Pipe-Rack beams or other structures shall not be subject to torsion due to the attachment of
supports.

8.1.19 The maximum load that can be applied to a platform without notifying Civil: 250 Kg/m².
