Concepts and Principles of Immersion

Learning Objectives:
 Understand the concept and principle of immersion and its significance to their academic life.
 Apply these principles both in the planning of activity for immersion program according to the needs of
the community to be adopted.
 Formulate their own objectives for the immersion program according to the needs of the community
to be adopted.
Immersion
 Is a accepted and rigorous academic and discipline-based pedagogy distinct from any other traditional
and experiential approaches to teaching and learning.
 Its allows the students to explore the social, political, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of a society.
 It gives the students the opportunity to learn values and social realities.
 It provides an opportunity to apply thier academic learning to real situation.
Objectives of the NSTP IMMERSION Programs:
For the students:
1. The activity allows them to fully internalize their experience in the community service leading to a lifelong
commitment to social change.
2. Helps the students attain self-actualization by bringing out in themselves their potentials and talents as they
live in the stream of community life.
3. Apply the knowledge gained in the learning institution.
4. Prepares the students for their professional careers and personal endeavors.
For the Community
1. Assist them in their decision-making about the future.
2. The activity provides the community with immediate assistance
3. Mutually respectful relationship between the community and the academe.
4. Encourage the community to embark on enterprices that would uplift their socioeconomic needs.

Provides them to apply the textbooks to cover real-life examples.

Immersion as a Component of Community Development

 Community development is defined as a process of developing active and sustainable communities


based on social justice and mutual respect.

 Immersiom as a proposed community development program delves at the very heart of this smallest
yet significant social unit.
The following values are nurtured and learned through immersion:
Social Justice- enabling people to claim their human rights, meet their needs and have a greater control over
the decision-making processes that affect their lives.

Participation – Democratic involvement by people in the issues that affect their lives based on full citizenship,
autonomy, and shared power, skills, knowlegde, and experience.

Equality- Challenging the attitudes of individuals,a nd the practices of institutions and society, which
discriminate against marginalized people.

Learning- Recognizing the skills, knowledge, and expertise that people contribute and develop by taking action
to tackle social, economic, political, and environmental problems.

Co-operation- Working together to identify and implement action, based on mutual respect of diverse
cultures and contributions.
