DIFFERENCE AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ECUADOR AND ENGLAND ON

CARNIVAL HOLIDAY

In Ecuador, as in England celebrate important holidays in which many of these

days are held festivals or events to commemorate them, the objective of this

essay is to analyze the similarities and differences that exist between both

countries through characteristics that each one has during the holidays of carnival

such as: music, clothing, customs and cities where it is celebrated.

“Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street festival, is a vivid spectacle

representing London's multicultural past and present” (Joyes, 2016). So, this

party is celebrated the last weekend of August and the duration of time is between

two to three days. These holidays usually start a Saturday with festivals, the

music Caribbean and calypso, groups use traditional instruments of percussion.

Also in these celebrations, people and groups or organizations make a similar

parade of Brazilian, “The procession begins and ends at Canal Way, Ladbroke

Grove W14” (O'Ceallaigh., 2016).

However, in Ecuador, people celebrate the carnival of different ways, but the

dates for this holiday vary for years depending from the calendar. At the beginning

of these holidays, Ecuador as a Catholic country, has a tradition that wish

shouldn’t eat meat because it is the beginning of Easter, however, people have

fun during these days because they play with filled balloons with water, rotten

egg or itching powder. In addition, “People used to wear colorful masks and dance

to the rhythm of lively music” (Tours, 2013).

I think that exist similarities in these two countries because the holiday is from

Brazilian culture, but the difference is that each country has been molding this

party to their liking. So, the aspect that surprised me most was that during this

festival in England becomes multicultural, especially in the musical field like

music festivals are performed highlighting the genre Caribbean and Calypso. On

the other hand, the people of England would be surprised by the way in which

Ecuadorians celebrate this feast, especially for the games they perform that

consist of taking balloons filled with a water, rotten egg or itching powder and

throwing them at people.
